Audi A4 Avant 2.0 BRD 170bhp, 2 fault codes and rough engine

Hi Guys,

I recently brought an A4 from ebay and the next day the orange EML light came on. I contacted Audi who was able to source the missing service history and apparently the engine was replaced at 88k Due to oil punp failure, it's now done 160k.

If the engine was replaced by Audi due to oil pump failure, would the new replacement engine still have the same hex key design flaw?

I took the car to an independent garage and the following codes came up,

004708 PD injector cylinder two (p1264) regulation range exceeded
008194 Particulate trap bank one (p2002-006) efficiency below threshold

The guy at the garage said I'll need a new number 2 injector and loom and that the labour costs could run into the thousands, when I asked him specifically how many thousands he said "there's no way of knowing, changing the injectors could mean stripping it down if it gets stuck". The garage is a bosch approved garage in Northampton. He also said I may need a new EGR valve as well.

With regards to the DPF he said I'll need a new one,
should I bother trying the Halfords DPF cleaning service first, they offer a money back guarantee if it doesn't work. He said once the light comes on it can no longer regenerate so cleaning wont do anything, is this true?

At the moment, my car sounds like a 10 year old ford transit but it drives ok. The EML light is off now but I imagine it will come back on again and the previous owner disabled it to sell on ebay. My main question is, is the car ok to drive at the moment or am I doing damage, the guy at the garage said I can drive it.

Thousands for and injector seems ****** excessive! The injectors are expensive to buy, iirc about £400 each. I would start by calling your dealer to make sure you don't have a really old recall on your injectors (years back they were recalled and replaced). Unlikely I know but Its worth a try.

As for egr, unless there is something wrong with it mechanically then it'll probably just need removing and cleaning (approx 1 1/2 hrs laboor).

If DPF is blocked I'd recommend getting it gutted and remapping the car. At around £500 its far cheaper than buying a new one.

I'm no expert so cant say if its causing further damage however If it were me I wouldn't be driving it for sure.
 
Thanks for the quick reply, I have a funny feeling the garage was trying to rip me off. When he said you can't clean EGR valves I knew something wasn't right. I've cleaned the EGR valve on my B6 and it made a huge difference to the performance of that car.

I did phone Audi and ask if there are any recalls and they said the car had none, bit confusing as the engine was replaced when it was a lease car..

Would a faulty injector make the car sound noisey / rattley?

I'm looking to spend upto £1000 on this car as I did get it cheap on ebay but I'll be honest, I'm absolutely petrified about this whole oil pump issue. Am I being a hyperchondriac? Do you think the replacement engine would still have a design flaw with regards to the oil pump? Audi won't tell me.

I'm against remapping as I got my B6 130bhp mapped to 170bhp and it went through 2 clutches in the space of 6 months. I know you can uprate them but I don't want to be heading into the whole modified car terrirtory, I just want a reliable (lol) nice looking Audi for long distance journeys. Am I correct in presuming you have to remap to stop the ECU throwing a DPF error if I deleted the DPF?

I'm not a mechanic and my skills are limited to really simple jobs.

As what Steve has said above basically.

As well as it being a faulty injector it could also be a faulty loom.

And as for the DPF it could be as simple as a faulty pressure sensor on the rear of it so it's saying it's blocked when in fact it isn't. But if it is blocked you could end up with a bigger repair bill of a new turbo added on top.

Ive just had my oil pump moddification done at mb service`s in sheffield at a cost of nearly £600,as for the dpf they are specialist in dpf`s
and they have the machine to clean the dpf`s i know its a bit of a trek from where you are but might be worth a call,these cars aint cheap when they start,i had a new turbo last month£1000,the the oil pump mod £600 if it wants anymore money on it,it will be gone,me personally i wouldnt drive it could cost you in the long run.
 
Regarding "004708 PD injector cylinder two (p1264) regulation range exceeded" I've got this intermittently in my logs on injectors 1 and 2 – mine were done on the recall (plus loom). I'm having it checked over in the next couple of weeks and have a new loom ready to go in as well. Just want it checking that the injectors are set correctly as in my brain the car has been lumpy since Audi did the work in 2012. Just deliberating whether to replace the seals at the same time as its approx £30 per injector for the kit.

Regarding your oil pump... can't be sure yours is going to fail (pot luck in my opinion but some would say every single one fails) but even the revised oil pumps can fail. I had mine replaced with an modified one just for peace of mind. However after it was replaced the mechanic said the original was just fine and his opinion was that it didn't need replacing at all.

Regarding remap... You don't have to have more power you could ask the tuner to map out the dpf and give you a smoother delivery of power. I've a 170 too and they are frustratingly laggy but dpf delete plus remap can rid you of this annoyance
