Audi A3 8V Reverse Camera (High) DIY Retrofit guide!!

For those monitoring @Amused retrofit project, the following was completed via a remote session yesterday, London to Serbia:

• Camera Unit works correctly
• CAN wiring correct
• Video wiring looks correct
• Various coding and adaptations tested

After testing all we could, and ended the session, I completed further research and have found that the MMI unit within the vehicle is a very very basic model, MIB2 STD with no Nav support, which does not include the needed hardware on its mainboard to be able to handle video input.

Thanks for all the help, Alex! Only upgrading the head unit will definitely confirm your theory, but I guess you are right as we have eliminated all other possible causes.

Hi knowledgeable folks of the forum. I wanted to do something nice for my mom so I recently bought a new oem reverse camera unit with all the necessary wires and modules for her A3 8V sportback.

We got everything installed but have really been struggling with the coding. The mmi screen pops up the odd occasion that reverse is selected, though not every time. But the screen is just black and shows no image.

I took some photos of the autoscan, apologies for the glare. My installers laptop is ancient so can't connect to his WiFi lol. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction.

Kinda need to see a full autoscan for context but from what I can see the Camera in question is correct, parameterised, coded and communicating without issue. You have the following issues however:

• 37 - Navigation - This is not a valid module for the MQB platform and should be removed form your CAN Gateways Installation List.
• 10 - Park/ Steer Assist - Your Gateway cannot Communicate with this module. Would suggest a wiring issue which needs to be checked and resolved before your camera will work.

Please can you supply a full autoscan, saved as a text file and uploaded / attached here.

Not really. Your "hacked" unit may not have all the needed options active. Currently trying to resolve an issue a customer has with a hacked unit he purchased which has DAB radio but no menu options to be able to use it.

Which options might that be? I triple checked the coding and everything is done by the book. The only fault I get for the camera module is “no basic setting”. Yet it doesn’t work, at least a black screen would mean something. But absolutely nothing happens here.

Options that us "non hackers" cannot see. There are services menus and more which sit behind the scenes here. much like the "green" developer menu. Only people in the "know" know how to get at them.

More than happy to test the camera if you want to send it to me. Will connect it to my own car.

Well if the camera tests ok then its the wiring or the MMI unit that's at fault. If you can talk to the camera with VCDDS or alike then your main loom is ok, that's the power / earth / CAN Hi and Low, so only video could be an issue. This would produce a black screen however so personally I believe there is an issue with your MMI unit. In fact I know it is and here is why (just remembered, been a long couple of weeks):

I had a customer who purchased a used PFL car which had a retrofitted MIB2 "hacked" unit. He wanted a Reversing Camera Retrofit and once the installation was complete the camera would not work. I suggested he had the unit re-hacked, which he did via someone he found online, and the reversing camera worked without issue.... however he lost his DAB option. He returned to the "hacker" and long story short Mr hacker got angry, my customer left and is still without DAB.

*Please note that I do not know how to hack, I just understand the process, so I cannot answer everything.

Indeed, not many people would have. What you have to understand is how these systems work. Think of any MMI system as having layers:

1: Hardware
2: Operating System / Firmware
3: Parameters
4: Adaptation and Coding

These are the basic "layers" which tell the system that it is a car radio and not a toaster, how to be a radio and how to behave when used. Many people are not aware of layer 3: Parameters as until the MQB platform (our cars) parameters have not played a major part in a cars systems "coding" or retrofitting. So Layer 4 tells the unit what to do and what's connected however there is a layer 3.5, which I have no name for, which controls what's presented to the available Menus and Options on the MMI. I believe something within this layer, which is not accessible to anyone other than hackers and VW Group engineering staff, which is not set correctly.

Example of the above, but using the older MMI 3G+ as I have no experience of this with the MIB1 or 2 systems:

To activate this you go in to the 09 - Cent Elect Module > Long Coding and activate Bit 6 of Byte 16, or at least you would think this is what's needed. What actually happens is nothing because the MMI has not been told if its allowed to display this menu, or indeed where it can display it. In addition to this Long Coding you also need to launch the hidden green / developer menu (layer 3.5 control) and perform the following:

1: browse to the Car Device List Menu and "allow" Interior Light.
2: browse to the Car Menu Operation Menu and assign the now allowed Interior Light menu to menu portion 5.
3: browse to the Car Bus Assignment menu and assign Interior Light to the vehicles Comfort CAN.

Only once the above has been completed will the Interior Lighting option for Footwell Lights show on the MMI screen.

I believe reversing camera "feature" has not been activated at layer 3.5 and that's why it's not working.

Why did I call this a re-hack? My customer did not know the history of his retrofitted MIB2 unit, it came with the car, so we did not know the hacking method and this is why I suggested a re-hack. Method... as in more than one method? Yes, there is more than one way to hack an MIB unit but all the ones I have come across so far have been software hacked.

For those who are not aware the only way to retrofit an MIB1 or MIB2 unit in to a vehicle which is not meant to have one is to hack its software else all the features shutdown bar Analogue Radio.

Need a diagnostic scan from vcds or alike in order to see what’s going on. FL or PFL versions of the reversing camera (with or without external module) will work in any car.

Firstly - thank you all for this topic!

Two months ago I bought Audi A3 8V 2017. My car was imported to EU from USA. Dealer installed EU version of MMI, and unfortunately factory-installed reverse camera is not working . The camera has started sometime for few seconds, and MMI close the rear view - this happened only two times when I switched on reverse gear.

I bought OBDeleven PRO, and set "6C Camera System Rear View" as amit87 described in first page of this topic. It's still not working .

Version of my MMI: 0148. I think I have MMI 3G+, because I have SIM card slot in my car. Below I attached OBDeleven full scan log. Do you have any ideas what can I do with it?

Hi. Did anyone managed to get rid of the error "message Parkhilfe_01 not received" after rear camera retrofit? I retrofited a FL rear camera, it works as it should when I engage reverese gear and if I press the PDC button, the camera image+ops graphic go away. But if I press the PDC button to bring the camera image+OPS graphic on the MMI screen it doesn't work, but the parking sensor become active and beep as they should. I already updated the gateway firmware from version M to AJ, and also updated the Park Assist firmware. But the issue/error persists. Any ideas?

Check with @DJAlix on here. I would say he was very reasonable considering he came up to Scotland for the job. Even looking at parts from likes of kufatec he wasn’t much more than the cost of the parts.

Hi Alix. I have a my18 s3 with just rear parking sensors. £387 kit work with that? Does it also have the parking graphics or is that only if adding front sensors?

Genuine Audi highline reversing camera, will work with any A3, even without any sensors.

If your vehicle only has rear sensors then all you are gonna get is a camera display with the adaptive moving guidelines. To get parking sensors to display on facelift cars you need to have both front and rear.

Mine only has rear parking sensors so will i just get the reserving camera and the beeping from the sensors after fitting ?

Correct. Reversing camera image with adaptive / moving guidelines overlay on the screen, Your rear sensors will function as they currently do. I have images from retrofits with your spec, will post one up in a little bit.
