Audi A3 8V Reverse Camera (High) DIY Retrofit guide!!

Ok so my order from vag-tec arrived yesterday. I say 'order'... some or my order anyway. They didn't send me the camera module holder or the removal keys - no idea why, they just didn't. I'll be on to them later to get a refund for those.
I'm slightly annoyed that their kit doesn't appear to be made up of 'new' parts. Everything has most definitely been removed from another car. The long wire from camera to camera module has green plugs on it rather than the colour coded grey ones I'd expect it to.
I had a few hours spare so I made a start on fitting it...
I started by laying everything out to familiarise myself with how it all connects and I instantly start to query the supposed location of the camera module. Why make / provide such a long cable if the module is meant to sit 1 - 2m from the boot release / camera itself? In my mind, with a cable that long, the module box belongs up front... at least in a 3dr like mine.
The first part of your guide is no use for a people with 3dr cars, so I just started 'winging it'.
There are 2 x T25 screws to remove under where the warning triangle lives. I removed the 2 flaps that provide access to the lights on the tailgate / boot itself and basically just used these are places to 'pull' ! 14 Clips later and it's off. Each side has 2 clips. 4 along the tope near the wiper arm, 2 right at the bottom near the latch and 4 somewhere in between (but nearer the bottom).
The remove the trim around the window, use your trim tool or a screwdriver to lift the 2 visible round poppers / clips and pull them out. The trim has 2 clips on each side and 4 along the main bit. As with the last one, just pull it.
Now unclip the lead from the old boot release handle and undo the 2 x 10mm nuts on it with a socket set or spanner. This thing is much harder to get at on a 3dr than the saloon pictured in the guide. The rear clip is still visible but the little tiny white tabs are a pain. I ended up using an L shaped Allen Key (probably a 5mm) to get access to them and push them in. You have to get the key through little round cut outs in the metal work in order to push them in. Once you've removed it, push the other one into place, do the nuts back up on it and put the lead back in - so you can open the boot if you accidently close it!
Knowing that the cable needed to head back towards the glove box area, I opted to route the cable to the left of the tailgate rather than the right and then have to double back on myself.
Now we're onto the removing the lower boot trim...
Pull the weather strip / seal off from around the boot opening. It's a pain and gets in the way! Now empty the boot... really empty it! Take the false floor out. Unclip and unscrew the sub (if you have one) - remove it and the spare wheel. Remove the polystyrene bits with the jack etc. in.
Remove the bit of trim covering the boot catch itself - the one that's the width of the car and gets scratched up! To do that, I recall you have to unclip it on each side and then pull it up. It slides over 2 button type fixings on the metal work - these are visible.
And now onto the trim on the left of the car...
There's a T25 screw you need to remove from the upper plastic trim around where the parcel shelf fixes in and another T40 one (guide says M8 spine but I don't have one and this worked) from the anchor point on the soft stuff.
Twist the coin slot type fasting at the top of the little 12v auxiliary socket cubby hole and gently pull it out. Unclip the lead going to the 12v socket and put the whole thing down somewhere safe. You now need to remove that entire section of trim. This part is fairly straight forward... it uses the same clips as on the other pieces you've removed. I have a little down facing LED that I had to unclip before I could totally remove the trim. The plug comes apart if you use a tiny (1 or 2mm) flat blade screwdriver and push it down on the silver bump. This bit of trim also clips over a button type fixing on the metal work. You don't notice it when removing the trim, but you need to make sure it goes back over it when you put it back. It's right down the bottom.
I didn't fully remove the head lining style trim just above it with the speaker in it... mainly because I couldn't. I managed to unclip it just enough to gain access to what I needed.
Rather than pulling 5m of cable through the rubber channels that go between the car and the tail gate, you obviously want to feed the cable through from the inside of the car rather than the other way around. The channel is already quite full of wires and so I took the plastic off the end of my coax wire by levering out the tiny purple clip using a screwdriver and using it again the release clip. The wire should then slide out. After that, all you need to push through the rubber is a slim line round bit of metal... no more chunky piece of plastic. I fed that through first and then very gently pulled on it to bring the power wires (and their plug) through as well. Now you can reconstruct the coax plug. Route the cable how you see fit. I spent ages trying to figure out the OEM way of positioning the cable and plugs, but never managed it! I'd love to see how it's done on a car that had the camera installed from the factory.
With the trim that's already off, you can cable tie or tape the wire to the existing loom as it heads towards the front of the car. This is where it became a nightmare. You can't really route the cable nicely / properly without taking off the rear door (but not a door in a 3dr car) trim. That's not an easy thing to do when you have no idea what you're doing! Bits of trim that look like individual parts are in fact not individual parts. The bit with the front seatbelt going through it has to come off. There are 3 clips at the bottom. One is technically on the side and hooks it over the lower trim. The other two just need pulling out from the lower trim. It's held in place at the top by 2 spears that go up into the metal work and another wrap around clip in the top corner of the rear passenger window. So once the bottom is unclipped, get the side off by the window, get your hand up behind it, try to push / pull it towards the other side of the car and pull down.
The main rear passenger trim is held in place by about 3 clips in line with the front seatbelt and numerous other ones along the top of it (bottom of the glass) and various places. With enough yanking around you might be lucky and get it off. Only you can't get it right off because it seems to fixed in position by the fixings for the rear seats?! There's a complete hole (as in, not a 'broken' hole) and one side of the fixing for the seat uprights goes through it. Anyway, with it pulled forward enough, you should manage to slide you hand behind it, route the cable and maybe tape it up as I did.
The trim by the passenger door unclips easily enough and it can be removed from the rear trim by sliding it forwards. There's a lug that stops it doing that easily, so you have to get past that and then slide. Unfortunately, that front bit of trim can't easily be removed either as it appears fixed under the rear bench.
So basically, if you want to get all of the trim off completely, it appears you need to remove the rear seats. I've done some Googling since yesterday and it appears the rear bench can be removed if you pull up from the front. There are 'U' shaped metal brackets / clips at either end (which I did see) and they have to pull out from whatever they're located in. I did give it quite a tug yesterday but was worried I would break something if that wasn't in fact how you got them out. The rear uprights might come out if you undo the centre fixing... I haven't looked into that too much.
If you can get the seats out, I've no doubt the rest would be much easier...but I cannot say if it's worth it or not time wise.
So now I have my wire to the front of the car and today I'll have a go at removing the glove box etc. and actually wiring it in.
The wires from the camera module that need wiring into the loom / fuse box are quite short... probably 1 - 1.5m, so that's why I'm thinking the box belongs at the front of the car. Plus that way, nothing needs extending.
I do have some photos from yesterday, so I'll try and insert those in the relevant places when I'm done.

Just at work so a quick reply. Thanks for your experience with the 3rd to date. Just to clarify I have checked elsawin and the module definately goes in the rear right side of the boot.... same equivalent position of that of my 4 Dr saloon. On the cabrio it goes behind the left hand trim in the boot. Only places you can fit the large bracket/holder.
Wiring loom won't be OEM... audi didn't have OEM wiring loom when I rang so either is bits taken out or completely made up afterwards.
Regarding parts being used... DJALIX said the same when he coded my camera module as it already had coding on it rather then all 0s in the coding line.... but if it works it's fine. New parts from audi will cost 3 times more minus the loom

Ok so I'm stuck 
Having told the car I've got a back-up cam installed, I can't then go into the module and do anything with it because it says there's been no response.
It's getting power ok and I'm pretty sure I've done the cam connections ok... what else could it be?!

Initial thoughts are you have a cabling and or power issue as your Gateway looks to be coded ok. Need to double check all your connections and possibly test each pin for continuity.
Lots of DTC's in your scan also. Might want to run an AutoScan again > clear DTC's > Untick Display Freeze Frame > Run AutoScan.
Ok so I'm stuck
Having told the car I've got a back-up cam installed, I can't then go into the module and do anything with it because it says there's been no response.
It's getting power ok and I'm pretty sure I've done the cam connections ok... what else could it be?!
Crickey sorry to see you are not having fun. I am about 2-4 days behind you in that I have ordered a rear cam, just waiting for delivery.
So very much interested in your progress and tips to a quick / easier future install.

Question out to the forum re Power supply for reversing camera...
Just having a good look around the boot this morning and I have question re power...I know you cant tap into the reversing light power as that might throw error codes with the power spike but... Why not use the 12V socket power supply in the boot? Is that why the power lead is the length it is??
Surely that stops the requirement to run power all the way up to the fuse box at front of car.
Or am I missing something ?

Unless there are CAN connections in the boot too, you'd still need to (extend+) run those to the front anyway... Along with the video feed from the module - the lead that came with mine was only about 1.5m long and it has the little pin sockets on it to push into the 12 way plug. I'm sure they must have their reasons for making the leads the length they do.

You seem to have added a module within your Gateway which the 8V does not use - 37-Navigation. Might want to un-tick this
The other remaining DTC's look to be related to your ongoing install.

Just thought I would update the thread in relation to RB_172's issue. I believe it would seem that the place the module was sourced from "tried" to flash the module back to stock / factory settings before sending it out... but they have not completed the process correctly, hence the "No End-of-Line Programming" DTC. Unit needs to be re-flashed and tested or exchanged.

You would need ODIS or Vag Can Professional + the correct firmware file for the module.

New here.. Recently purchased a S3 Sedan that came with 5.8" display, AMI and BT... I'm in the process of adding a Mirrorlink for AirPlay on my car, but also wanted to upgrade to 7" display. Does anyone know if I grab one of the 7" display off eBay, is it a direct swap or is there any coding needed to convert it to the high resolutions? Thanks!!

Screen change is not possible as its hardware limited. The standard MMI unit does not have the video card or the drivers capable of running the larger screen.
Installed Audi Rear Camera retrofit today with a lot of help from @RB_172 . Thx also go out to @amit87 who put a guide up and assisted with all of my many questions.
Things are very different between a saloon and hatchback/sportback. We took lots of photos so will be adding to the guide with a lot more detail over the next coming weeks.

Nice update to the guide Jungle Love that you added you'd spent ages trying to get the boot release out and I did it in about 3 seconds! haha
Hate to nit-pick but I had a quick look and spotted a couple of bits that aren't quite right to do with the fusebox.
There are *3* tabs you need to push in / unclip in order to remove it and you *only* need to slide out the top purple thing (it only moves a few mm) in order to then slot the new power connector / cable into place (which you can locate into position more easily if you guide it in having poked a long/thin screwdriver through from the front - as per the pic). Unless you've got tiny fingers and fingernails of steel, lever the purple thing out with an allen key or something. Space is somewhat limited in the working area and it's not easy to get a screwdriver in there to do it.
Oh and the guide mentions fixing it into slot SC18... but on my fusebox, the slot is actually labelled F18 (on the front anyway).

The boot release still gives me nightmares and makes me laugh in unison! What a pig on the hatchbacks. You clearly had the knack !!

Finally fitted with the reverse camera. Without the guide I could not have coordinate my supplier to custom made the cable looms (as they only supply the one for LHD vehicles) here are some pics of the retrofit.

Had the opportunity to conduct some testing around the issue which some people are having when trying to code the 6C Camera Module.
A module supplied with all 0's was returning "out of range" and "no end of line coding" errors. The module was posted to me, I made up a custom loom and connected the module to my own car for testing, and in order to resolve the issues a firmware re-flash and a parameterisation were needed.
If anyone encounters the same issues and cannot code their module, and cannot return / exchange it, please feel free to send me a message

Hi Guy's, great write up and thanks for all the info.
My kit arrived yesterday and I'm hopefully going to start my install later and/or tomorrow. The loom that came with my kit looks as though the camera module is designed to go in the front. Has anyone had this or can recommend where to site the camera module safely and securely. Not taken apart as yet and just planning ahead.
