First off, I want to thank you all in advance. you guys are my only hope on fixing this issue without spending a fortune.

After 2 years of owning a premium Audi a3, I grew tired of the basic looking pop-up display that has worse graphics than the Nintendo game boy. I decided to purchase the 7-inch display and upgrade the head unit. turns out the head unit is from a relatively new Audi s3. It looks so beautiful and crisp, gone are the days where I feel like I'm playing a 1998 version of pokemon. One problem though, I can only control the volume when I'm on a Bluetooth phone call, other than that the volume is grayed out and there's no sound coming in at all. I removed the white cable and reinstalled it and the audio worked for a split second before disconnecting again. If I have to go back to the old MMI, im not going to cry about it I may swell go back, however, i feel like there should be something i could do about it. I was thinking its an amplifier issue but the vendor said it was not pulled from a B&O soundsystem car. It doesn't have navigation so im guessing it probably didn't have B&O.
  1. audio-only works when I'm on Bluetooth call
  2. audio worked for radio for a split second when the white cable was removed, reattached and the vehicle was turned back on.
  3. radio volume won't move and is grayed out.

If theres any way you could help me with this I would greatly appreciate it.

Also, how can i figure out whether or not this is MIB 1 or MIB2? I honestly dont care which one it is as long as it supports apple carplay. If it does support it im going to purchase the AMI cable with usb.

If it needs coding im happy to pay in advance for help.

You have MIB2 Standard.

Not a plug and play retrofit, component protection (anti-theft) is active and has limited the sound and other functions as a result. Once component protection is removed and the unit coded to your vehicle you will see all features apart from Radio shutdown as their licences will not be valid to your vehicles VIN number. Only way to retrofit an MIB2 is to have it hacked and unfortunately only the Harman units, MIB2 High, can be.

Thank you so much! Should I purchase the MIB2 high instead? Not looking for the old Harman units as I want Apple car play most importantly. Is it the one with the Sim slot and says mib on the sticker?

You cannot just purchase a unit and throw it in your vehicle, you will have the same issues. You need to purchase a pre-hacked / activated Harman MIB2 High or find someone who can hack a unit which you supply. I would suggest contacting a retrofit specialist and have them complete the works end to end so there is no messing about.

Thank you for taking the time to help me. I got audi to remove the component protection! Just a question out of curiosity, does this unit have apple carplay? I wonder if i just need an ami to usb harness for it to work.

If the unit had Audi Smartphone Interface activated then it would have deactivated following the CP removal, all your features bar FM/AM radio should have as the unit is not supposed to be in your vehicle. Does your Bluetooth still work?

Everything is working fine, yeah. my main concern was audio and CarPlay.

Am confused on how this is working. You have not stated but I am guessing from your description that you have a PFL Audi A3/S3 which had an MIB1 STD with 5.8" Screen and have retrofitted an MIB2 STD with 7" Screen. You had issues with sound so have removed component protection and now you have all services working... is this correct?
