Hi guys, ive had a few posts on here now about my turbo problems, i recently had a few problems with my turbo, it originaly started when the car went in to limp mode, had an error code which stated overboost, i let it be and kept driving it, again it went in to limp mode. Overboost agin, i got some advice from you guys and decided to buy the innotech kit and usd it on my turbo. I noticed that when i used it the cleaner it worked realy well. The car felt alot more responsive. A few nights ago LIMP MODE AGAIN! Hooked it up and it was overboost agai. I have also noticed when i rev up and let off the revs there is a loud wooshing noise that sounds like its coming from the air intake. Is the turbo directly connected to the turbo? And will the wooshing noise from the air intake be coming from the turbo?

Anyway the result is. I have bought a recon garret turbo and its being fitted in the morning. Turbo + fitting with 12 month warrenty has cost £600. Does that seem reasonable? And have i made the right choice replacing the turbo?

Cheers

Chris

to recon your old turbo costs about £250ish

labour wise 2 - 3 hours i think my m8 just done mine so got m8s rates

oil + filter £30 tops.

gaskets

seams alot to me £600

i got turbo for sale in classifieds

A recon turbo is £350-400 so labour, oil change and other turbo parts make it £600 seem ok.

I did an oil and filter change 300 miles ago, is it necesary for the garrage to give it another? why would it need an oil and filter change?

My turbo went pop so the oil had to be changed. Not sure in your case.

midland turbos will recon your turbo for 180.00ish + vat trade price.

Where are you getting this done, I need a new one ASAP and have been quoted 750 from an Audi specialist in Leeds

Is that price for a new oem turbo or re-conditioned unit?

my m8s garage use midland turbos they send there old unit and they recon it and it comes back looking like new.

I have a turbo for sale in classifieds.

should go for a hybrid if you thinking of remapping

That is for my turbo sending off and getting a reconned one put in, they say its a full days work and includes oil etc, I would take it somewhere further afield if I had a recommendation and they were cheaper

Has your turbo already gone pop? If not and your just replacing it in advance of failure, then 3-4 hours labour should be the norm.

Hi, no turbo hasnt gone pop, as far as i am aware when it does go pop it means you need a new engine???? something about it running all the oil off and the engine wont turn off it just dries out and then its nackerd! The turbo is just a reconditioned unit, however ive seen it today and it just looks like a brand new unit so what is the difference realy? i mean it actualy looks brand new. You dont need a hybrid for a remap i know that. A remap with the original garret is no problem at all. my recon turbo has cost £380 inc vat with 12 month warrenty.

If/when it goes pop, stop the car immediately and don't restart it! This will save the engine.

No my turbo hasn't completely gone but it just trips to overboost when I am booting it and going quickly up hills, I guess I need to get some quotes from some other specialists too

Once my new turbo is fitted should i notice a difference in power. I mean replacing a turbo that has done 92000 miles with a new turbo should give some benefit. Do you think i will ntice it being a bit more responsive?

In my experiance, there was improvement though negligible, and that was with a brand new oem turbo and after putting the performance remap back on. Then again, mine was running fine before it wen went pop so you may notice more improvement with the current issues your experiancing.

I just had my turbo reconditioned from Midland Turbo.
my cars on 110k and has been going into limp mode everytime I floor it, It blew the Boost pipe off last month so I decided to get it done.
Cost me around £450 for the turbo as the old one was badly damaged inside. plus £150 labour.

Ive noticed a big difference, the cars so much smoother and responsive.
Just need a remap now so expecting even more gains!!

This is something I'm keeping in mind for the new year - my 8P 140 2.0TDi is already on 140K.. and just for peace of mind... need my belt and water pump changing first!

So 600 from midland turbo, how long did it take, best price I can find in Leeds is 750.00 for recon, do they take all day then as I could drop the car off in the morning then doss about in notts, what was the service etc like, also does anyone else have any recommendations?

Midland Turbo only supply Turbo's, dont think they fit them.
There price to recondition yours will depend on the turbo, if its not badly damaged then its around £180. But if it is damaged like mine was then its £450(inc VAT). Or you could buy a new Hybrid for around £700 I think. Turn around time is around 2/3 days, they pick it up and deliver it for free. Check out there website. I would recommend them, my turbo came back looking brand new.

Ive heard good reviews about Turbo Technics aswell but ive never dealt with them.

I got my local garage to remove and install mine, they charged me £150 including oil change and new Boost pipe.

I would seriously recommend getting it reconditioned before it goes blows!!
£180 it would cost, compared to £450 when it blows is a big difference!

I spoke to turbo dynamics who tell me that garrett do not sell the parts to recondition these turbos, and therefore any reconditioned units for stock use are not using recognised parts. They also warned me that as these are vnt turbos, their performance is very dependent on the angle of the variable vanes (as you would expect) which cannot be guaranteed to be consistent with the original if not garrett supplied. Garrett very tightly control this repair market and with this in mind TD offer only a replacement service with a core charge for when they receive your turbo.

They don't recondition, but you get a new unit when you send yours in.

They can offer garrett sanctioned hybrids on the same scheme, because they modify the same new turbos supplied by garrett when yours is sent in as a core exchange for garrett to overhaul.

I m not sure how much of this is scaremongering, but I have used Turbo Dynamics for years over many different cars and they have never let me down!

It also makes me wonder where all the remanufactured turbos are ending up?

I find myself tempted by the higher rated of their two hybrids at 225+bhp which they say is barely distinguishable in performance from stock but can in some applications pool to 240bhp.

Hi mate,
Cheers for that, yes I got a price from midland but need somewhere that can do the whole job, I called volksworks in Leeds who said it would be 600 plus vat including a 12 month guarantee, new boost pipe and oil filter. I don't think I am going to find much cheaper.

Also I don't think my stock set up would withstand the hybrid as tempted as I am!

£600 sounds like a decent price.
:icon_thumright:

I wanted a hybrid turbo but decided my car wouldnt be able to handle it! lol

Quite expensive in my opinion. I thought that in UK prices would be smaller. I've recently changed my turbo with a bigger one. I'm using a brand new VNT20 now. This is the turbo that was used on 2.5 TDIs 180PS. It costed me 500 Euros fitted. In a couple of weeks I hope I'll get a new remap to get more power.
I'm hoping for 220BHP.

My hybrid cost £550 trade and £100 fitting plus oil and pipes gaskets etc

Happy Days :jump:

Hate to sound Thick but whats the difference between a hybrid and normal turbo

Had my car back a day now, cost me £570 in total for recon garret fitted, i thought that was a good price. The car is running great now, i must say though im not sure that its as punchy as it was before. It really pulls at top end though. It seems like the turbo is coming in alot earlier but with not as much power, with my old turbo the power seemed to be there right away and you could really feel the power at early revs, the power seems to be delivered throughout the whole of the rev range now. The car is defo alot smoother than it was and less juddery! The old turbo that was on the car was gubbed! the actuater was almost solid, it would barely move. Could the carhave felt more powerfull with the old turbo because it was putting out to much boost??

good news then.

did you keep the old turbo ?

no had to send it away or £150 surcharge. Could barely get the actuator to move though, it was solid!!

Thats a joke

some ones made alot of money out of your sale.

but as long as your happy

Well it meant the turbo has cost me £340. I had a shop around and that was the cheapest, except the ones on ebay for £300, didnt fancy one of them though, i have been told that you cant realy get a recon for less than £300 and if you can its probs a crap one!!

oh rite thats ok thought you paid 570 plus they kept the good unit

thats good price then for a standard unit

£340 is a decent price
It will feel like a new car witht he turbo fixed

I have a almost new cr turbos GT7152 hybrid turbo bought last winder in december 2011, i put it off my car because i want to sell it as stock, if you are interested i can sell it to you for 500euro + shipping. The turbo can do 2300bhp smokeless and reliable.

Just had a new turdbo fitted by Inde-tech in Milton keynes. £1240 inc vat. Its a 2.0 TDI 140, 2004 with 55000 miles on the clock.

Thought I was doing the best thing, until I found this thread. What has really FU?k3D me off is that the car has started to lose small amounts of coolant over the past week and I asked the garage to have a look when they had the car apart. They could not find any sign of where it is leaking, so now it might be a head gasket or worse a porus head. So thats another £2000 to get that fixed. GREAT!

I am now searching on autotrader and I am finding myself looking at everything other than audi. I thought they were meant to be reliable and decent german cars. German tin with things going wrong that really shouldnt until at least 100k on the clock.
