Audi A3 (1.4tfsi) Stronic Service

Hi Folks,

I am slightly confused so, I thought I'll check it with the most helpful lot first ... I was under the impression that like on A4,5,6 etc the Stronic box on the A3 also needs regular servicing after 38k miles. So, I booked in the car with Oxford Audi today.

I just received a call from them saying that the car didn't need Stronic oil change (WTF) and that it was "for life" and that the booking team should've told me that while I was booking the car. This doesn't sound right to me as the Audi's website suggest Stronis and multitronics both need servicing @38k miles (see below):

I just wanted to check with you lot before going back to Oxford Audi or shall we say Audi UK to confirm that in writing as well.

If they say no make sure you have it in writing and keep it safe somewhere!

Any engines up to 250NM use dry clutches and sealed for life is the oil on the mechantronic side. Any engines with a torque output higher than 250NM use wet clutches. This is the transmission that requires the 38000 mile oil change, but this also has a sealed for life oil on the mechantronic side.

Cheers mate, that kind of explains it. It is a 125bhp / 200Nm "monster" with a single disc dry clutch ...

What engine size is yours. I played dumb when I went to pick up the car and the 'master tech' told me it didn't need servicing as mentioned above.

My bad, I wanted to ask the engine power and whether or not is it a COD engine, which is 140/150 bhp depending on the PFL or FL. As @f1nny has mentioned above it would need Stronic service if it is?

No as above stronic with dry clutches do not need servicing. The manual is not clear on this unfortunately but because the clutch is outside the oil it doesn’t need regular changes.

The independent specialist I used when I had the S3 just put my reg into his pc and it told him what needed doing and at what mileage, that was pulled from Audi. Some of the main Audi dealerships haven't got a clue when you phone them and ask anything technical! You are speaking to someone who just sits in an office and never even looks at an engine!

I phoned a main dealership and asked to speak to someone from the service department a couple of months back when I was getting quotes for the A5's first service. I asked which grade of oil do you use for the A5? She replied with I don't know you would have to speak to someone from the service department!!! I said I thought this was the service department? she said it is but we don't know the technical bits I gave up and rang someone else

She could have said read the f****** manual as they are all different which would have been a better response rather than her sounding like a complete clueless idiot.
I have no patience dealing with idiots. Get enough of that in my day job. If they sound like they don’t have a clue I will go elsewhere.

I'll be honest here, I don't discuss it with either the Service or the booking team as I don't expect them to know everything or in some cases even a little bit car related.

Just because someone works at a dealership it doesn't mean they know / have all the answers. They would only if they were a true petrolhead and have an interest in cars - how many petrolheads we have seen work at dealerships??? I have come across only one so far.

For most of the people working at any dealership (not just Audi) we have to remember that like most of us it is just a job for them too - to make enough to either make the ends meet or provide food on the table - nothing wrong in it.

And whilst the same applies to all the 'Techs' they are the ones who I would expect to know everything car related (and it excludes detailing ). As and when I have booked in a car I have very politely asked the booking team / service advisor that I would like to meet with the Tech would be working on the car. And I'll be very worried if they can't answer all my questions.

One of the reasons we go to our preferred Indies is because they are 'techies' people who actually work on the car and therefore know what they are talking about. And same applies to all the tech staff working at a dealership.

And ever since I have understood the difference I have calmed down
