Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has any idea if An Audi A3 1.4 TFSI CoD 66 plate engine it is recommended to change the water pump with the cambelt? I've heard some mixed comments online stating that the water pump is not on the same side as the cam belt, so if this is true there is no worth in changing them both at the same time in terms of labour etc?

Thanks,

It is indeed on the other side. Maybe for your own good you better change the housings and waterpump cambelt. Don’t forget the thermostat both

This is indeed true. Just booked mine in and was told it was run off another by elsewhere in the engine bay. Therefore it’s just a cam belt change.

I have the same car as you on a 66 plate

When my 63 plate 1.4TFSI was due a cambelt change at Audi I asked about changing the water pump too. Told it wasn't needed so ended up with only a cambelt change. Cambelt change was expensive enough and as mileage was quite low I didn't argue and to be fair, four years later, everything is still ok.

I have a 2016 plate A3 1.4. on less than 50K. I went to get my cambelt change and my local audi specialist said not to bother. car still young. Spoke to Audi to see if not changing the belt would void the warranty and they said no.

of course u change this at 100k miles

Open for debate the duration / miles which you should wait before changing the cam belt.

My local Audi Indy suggested every 5 years or 100k whichever occurred first.

As it’s rubber it will degrade. We work with rubber products at work and we recommend relifing equipment every 5 years due to o ring degradation

For me it’s not worth the aggro if it snaps or skips a tooth and piece of mind is worth more to me than saving 400 quid on a car worth £15 to 20k

However each to their own

So you see according to "Audi UK" then its 5 years then yes my car is due a cambelt change. According to Audi (Global) then no its not. Like I said I spoke to my local Audi Garage and they said not to bother, come back at 100k as someone mentioned, they also said its a small engine and doesnt really put that much strain on the belts and they have never seen or heard a 1.4tfsi engine with a snapped cambelt. like you said its up for debate.

Exactly ..
Your belt will be like new.. It is strange audi told u so, they always says, oh yes it needs replacing... to make £600 bucks...
I replaced belt, pump and bits few weeks ago at 80 od k and checked belt was only rusty and still good, no any cracks or whatever... And pump were only rusty too but nothing wrong with it.. I have purchased kit for £100 and at friends garage he replaced it for £150 for me. I only did it because in the morning when I started engine I could hear whistling for about 2-3 minutes and that was only tensioner only off..
And I have 2.0 184 mapped to 200 od bhp was driving fast for 2 years (in summer july it will be 3 years) and I was thinking nah meh, didn't have to..
And I have error coming up camshaft position sensor time to time not always. And thought it will sort it out but it didn't. I even changed sensor and still.

I agree the uk vs global stance on this feels like it's driven by profit making only, to help dealers make some more money. Especially as most cars wont make it to 100k within warranty.

But I would caution those who say an old belt 'looked ok'. You can only see the surface of the belt. You can't see how its structure may have changed internally....

I use a trusted independant that have always been fair with me, had this same debate and advice was change it as not worth the potential bill if it does break. Seems we each have to make our own decision on this one.

Sorry to bring this back alive. What are the going rates for water pump and separately cam belt changes?

Just been quoted just under 500 for each (separately) from an VAG indie which seems abit steep

I paid 475 at an Indy for the cam belt.

Water pump didn’t need replacing as it’s run off a different belt on the 1.4 COD engine so I didn’t bother with that.
