Well when in rome as they say, just seemed only right to follow in the footsteps of Bristle Hounds great thread and do one for the trusty GSD.

I'll start of then with of a couple of our current big man, he is 4 1/2 years old and quite a handful most of the time but I've allways had GSD's so i'm used to them and their ways.
Oh yes and did I say he just loves carrying a stick or should I say tree.....lol , but a real softy at heart as you can see with his best pal Archie , he's our manic miniture schnauzer.

I was brought up with GDS as my parents would train them and we did breed a few at my parents friends kennels. I must of known about 15 of them including the bitches that were breeding dogs, when we had three boys at home you can imagine the state of the house when they ****** each other off. I have two cats at home which the kids and wife love but i dont have much interest in so when i can two gsd dogs will be bought.

Before our current GSD, Max , we had two brothers and sometimes they would kick off but a firm shout and they new to stop, well most times...
sadly one died at an early age but the other one, also max lived till the age of 15 years, which is very good for a shepherd.

we have had a fair few over the years , our first was a rescue from battersea back in the early 80's and a full blown ex service dog , full german bloodline and a magnificant beast.
Very gentle with us but get on the wrong side of him and you'd know about it , still miss him to be honest but hey have a great replacement so all is well in our world, allmost.

My most remembered ones were Aaron and Caleb, Aaron was a beast he loved me and when i would be out walking him no one could get close to me and Caleb the biggest and most gentle gsd you could ever meet and when we had thunder he would get in the bath and hide behind the shower curtain. 15 is brilliant cant remember many that got past 11/12 with the hips going, we had a couple die early and a couple put down due to sickness. There is three in moms back garden and the rest dad took to Ashdown Forrest which is where we did most of our walking with them. The Ghurkas would train up there and the dogs would always sniff them out, they would be barking away at the bushes and all of a sudden these Ghurkas would stand up and come over to say hello, great memories miss them all.

I own one and to be fair they are a very special dog they are so clever and obedient here is mine.

Only just noticed this thread after all these years!
Collected my A6 C8 Avant this week (pics in the C8 forum). The reason for going for the Avant, as opposed to saloon? My boy Max:

He's great and another Max....and avants are GSD friendly..lol , well just about if one has a B7 A4 that is.

I have and still own an English springer spaniel
Anywho, i think for my next doggy, i will be chasing a belgian malinois.
Awesome dogs and a combination between a working dog like a springer and a German shepard

I was looking at German Shepard puppies as I think every kid should have a dog growing up and it’s one of the few dogs me and misses agree we both like. Never knew that there was a blue German Shepard never seen one in my life, beautiful dogs

Dogs are indeed a fundamental aspect for kids, indeed i think everyone growing up around them will agree too!
The presence of a dog is priceless.
I am sure if they did a test on characters, people around dogs would be a better type.

I posted a pic of my boy Max further up, but on the subject of growing up with dogs, this is the guy I grew up with; Major.
So many happy and then very sad memories of this guy.

The pain of losing a dog is terrible.
******** and there short shelf life..
Its mad though because there all different.
They may look the same, but in my experience all way different personalities

Just bringing this thread back to life really.
I've not posted any of the big man since mid may after his very close call with death thanks to a nasty case of GDV, anyway he's fully recovered now and looks as good as new , albeit minus his spleen, which he'll get by without .

Still has a thing about big stick too...lol

It's a common problem in larger breeds for the stomach to twist isn't it?
Hope you were insured.
How much is that type of operation in today's money out of curiosity?

He fine now for the most part but tends to be a bit more restless during the night than before but only a small amount.

I gave up on pet insurance many moons ago , got sick of paying out , I just stash some money away just in case.
It was a hefty bill and not much change from £6k in the end, but hey it's only money and a dog is for life not just for when it suits the owner, we would be lost without him so he worth so much more than money.

Anyway , he's doing well and hopefully will carry on for some years to come.

Looking good there Rob at least hes making a full recovery heres a few of my girl she 18months now so fully grown not as big as I thought she would get but at 30kg all is good
