Hi everyone I'm getting a S3 again soon and was looking at remapping it to stage one and was wondering what people think of the two makers stage 1 maps. I had a revo stage 1 map on my last S3 and then went to stage 2 eventually but had to change certain things that revo say you have to change . So here's my question REVO claim 300bhp for a stage 1 but yet APR claim to get 323bhp from a stage 1 map. How have they managed this when to get that?

Just a little confused sure someone will be able to shine some light on the subject for me thanks in advance :)

Don't be taken in by all the claims.

It's easy to quote the best result and go with that but in everyday use the average of what everyone gets is far more useful than peak figures.

Revo,APR and Shark are probably the best of the current maps and each would give you a good upgrade over the stock figures and drive ability.

Also a few percent in top end power is unlikely to be used or noticed but good midrange torque will be.

Most Revo Stg1 maps hit around 310 bhp but conservatively rating your product is always sensible as the setup on each car may vary.

The best course is to try each and see which you like best before deciding and if I were doing the same as you now,I would do just that.

It is also clear that APR is making a big push for the UK market currently and whilst this in no way detracts from their products it is worth bearing in mind.

I've been running APR Stage 1 for over three years over here in Aus.
APR are very big here.
They did a revision update a couple of months ago and it's excellent.
Highly recommended.
Cheers

Personally (and I've owned 2 S3's with maps by 2 different tuners), I can't see the S3 making 323bhp with just a remap. The air intake, fuel pump and the downpipe really hold the car back from delivering those sort of figures.

Revo and MTM are the two maps I've experienced, and both were very sound products, but I only really started to feel that the car opened up to those kind of numbers with additional mods.

Anybody can make a graph say whatever they want, and numbers on a bit of paper don't tell the whole story by any means. The more I spend time looking into this, the best option is to get a passenger ride in a customer car or in a demo vehicle.

We tend to get a 'Which remap' thread on a regular basis, and what amazes me is that people focus disproportionately on some assumed numbers rather than what the whole package offers. Have a read of this post and it will give you some broader considerations as to what's on offer: LINKY

Like the TV series 'The Prisoner', a remap is not just a number! (And lets face it, a couple of BHP here or there once you get over 300bhp is unlikely to be detectable by bum dyno unless you have the senses of a fly!)

Warren is absolutely right.

You need to know exactly what else was on the car before making a conclusion about why one looks better than the other in terms of figures.

I've seen a few of these threads over the last few weeks and it's left me wondering what a BUM dyno is... The penny's just dropped!

Personally I'm very drawn to APR at the moment with SHARK my other option. REVO have recently been acquired by the Stasis group and I've read some concerning things about Stasis' goings-on. APR are now an official engineering partner of VW-Audi Racing, which must say something; Conversely the fact that so many S3 owners swear by SHARK is also noteworthy. My friend, a local tuner, is an APR agent and wants to map my car, but N8 and the Brodster on here both do SHARK and have been very helpful with their info about it. So it boils down to those two, Likely to be APR just simply as its round the corner from me and can be live-mapped not just generic.

Warren - how does a decent CAI (thinking VWR) affect the remap gains?

Believe me, there are all sorts of rumours spinning about in the tuning market right now as margins get squeezed, market share gets eroded (as new players enter the market), and people get 'bought' by tuning houses to spread negative propaganda. Personally I'd treat a lot of what you hear with caution, look beyond the politics and choose a map based on what you need. They're all fundamentally sound products, I just think it depends on your personal view as to whether a company sells it's products on it's merits rather than rubbishing other companies that should play a part of your decision making process.

I've not heard anything untoward about STASIS so far, they're R8 is rumoured to be one of the best R8 conversions according to Fourtitude and others. I don't want to start a thread where we start dissecting or challenging reputations, but it seems that in the last 12 months there have been a lot of very 'interesting' negative stories floating about with respect to Revo / Stasis, and it wouldn't take a genius to hazard a guess where the source of a lot of these myths are coming from.

There are various figures out there that state these things can achieve anywhere between about 15 and 35bhp depending on who you believe. If you go APR I'd suggest you'll be going for the Volkswagen Racing / ITG product as that's what APR would suggest (and is part of there recent exclusivity partnerships after buying out VWR).

Also Giac are good maps and think thats the road i will go down again now on my newly acquired S3,i have been in many different peoples cars running various tuning mods from different people but i like how giac cars deliver there power and i have never had any issues with anything on the other 2 cars i have had there software on

I had a revo mappped s3 for past 2 years, started stage 1 & then to stage 2+ (which changes car completely). all my cars before that were even revo mapped (octavia vrs, A4 dtm edition) as they were only reasonable guys in game at the time really.

however i have just changed my car to a new s3 and i have chosen APR, simply for the reason that they are big in the US, AUS too & seem to have good customer support.

the old map, they had even upto last year caused a lot of problems on my old s3 when i got a trail uploaded, causing miss-fires and even problems with starting.

so i was reluctant to go down the APR route, but after reading nothing but good reviews from the new map and seeing diffent dyno runs (which mean noting really, as others have said) and even speaking to APR on the phone and at awesome gti open day along with people who have switched from revo to apr for a try..... i now love it :)

All i can say is that the new APR map is very good in my opinion, very drivable and has a good feel, the revo map was also very good put did have a pause at 5,000rpm and much more torque low down, but they have released an update in past months to compete with APR & gets rid of the pause whilst the fuel pump catches up. making it more like the APR map

Finally all i would say is, ignore figures, go either REVO or APR they are both good, pick the one with the garage/dealer who will give you support if you have any problems or any future upgrades.

hope it helps

Hi,

I am finding all the read on the forum fantastic, as I am also looking at getting my Audi A4 2.0TDI S-line (120BHP) remapped, I have Revo, Shark and Rick, but who to take on for price, service and workmanship

Great thread.

Seconded, it is all about personal preference and what suits the individual. I found REVO too boosty and preferred the GIAC acceleration but each to their own

The only reason I started this thread was because I live in a little town called hay-on-wye and its far away from the all of the revo, Apr and shark dealers so I wanted to see if there was more people saying one brand rather than the other haha but everyone has got good review. So my decision is still a tough one there is a 3rd option just down the road from me is a vag specialist and he does Oscarli recaps but can't find much info on them :/ . But thanks everyone for there views and experiences

Just a few things worth mentioning.

I've never seen anything untoward regarding Stasis either.

If you're talking about VWRacing,it's an independent company not a part of VAG and not only tunes cars but runs a racing series.

APR buying into that is no different than any other two companies merging for various reasons such as Revo and Stasis for instance.

Until the exclusivity deal over the ITG intake, this was the best of the CAIs freely available on the market and I see no reason why it shouldn't continue to be although now you can only source it from VWRACING/APR.

I've had very good dealings with VWRACING previously and use their brake kit.

Shark are definitely an up and coming software supplier and have a good reputation.

As I've said above try and test all of the main contenders before making a decision.

Stage 1 is not getting 323hp with APR. I would like to see that documentation. Stage 1 is getting around 305 and is similar to REVO. In order to get more hp with APR you need Stage 1++ with a fuel pump and CAI and even that is not getting the 335 marketed. I'm a fan of APR as a few above know. Most of the love comes from US customer service as REVO is a little flat in that department here. My other issues between the two are in the past. STaSIS involvement with REVO will likely benefit STaSIS. Due to the economy all tuners are in flux but both tunes are very good

Stage 1 should see around 305-310bhp. We are a Shark dealer so if you want any info on that or prices just drop me a PM. Living in the sticks isn't a problem with the STS.

As Warren has been saying, there has been a hell of a lot of mud slinging going on for a while now. Some of it very unsubstantiated.

Shark STS is good as long as it delivers the 'new' ECU map that includes the DSG tweak if you have DSG. IF it does not, then it ain't that good.
My car was only around 285 bhp after the STS, BUT, BUT BUT I must stress that was before Shark included the DSG tweak to stop it limiting the torque.
For me, STS was a waste of money as I had to visit Shark to get the most out of my map and the car. Suffice to say, customer service more than satisfactory, in fact very good, time spent with me and my car, very good, so although not a good 'start' for me, the end result was worth it with Shark giving nothing but 100% to get it sorted for me.
As I keep saying, living only 7 miles from them helps! LOL
