Anyone quite quickly regretted buying?

Had my A4 Black Edition Plus in sepang blue around a month but already find myself searching the internet for something different. For some reason it just doesn’t seem to be doing anything for me, exterior wise it looks beautiful but interior & driving just don’t interest me. I drive my work van all week & at the weekend I make my partner drive the car as I’m just not bothered about driving it.

Previously owned a Merc E250 & I thought they weren’t all they where made out to be but now I find myself back tracking and wishing I still had my E class. Not sure if it’s because I came from the more powerful 2.2 205hp engine to a 2.0 150hp. Either way, it looks like after Xmas the A4 will be gone.

Is it only me, or has anyone else done the same?

Not quite the same as I have an S4 so can’t comment on driving but absolutely no regrets.

I find the interior stunning, everything well designed and intuitive for the driver, the VC is great and overall attracts many positive comments.

What has taken your fancy so far?

Forgot to mention, I have the last of the B8.5 (65 plate) so no VC. I always post in the B9 section as there’s more activity. Although I find the interior a little more modern than the E class I still find the b8.5 lacking.

At the minute we’re looking at a CLA, but would quite like to have another Mercedes with the 250 engine in it. Which makes the cla quite pricey. Also looking at the 4 series coupes.

    Ah right ok.

Well the interior of the CLA is the same as the A class I believe? My wife has an A class and I absolutely HATE it. Not designed well, cup holders useless, can’t get used to the one stalk design and the MMI controls awful.

No experience with the beemers but I hear a common theme of them being dated?

S9 Audi all the way for me personally, best interior by far in that class.

So if you Maco have a b8.5 then this compares very different to the b9, as the current car is ahead of the previous model in terms of the interior and the refinement..

CLA interior is one thing putting me off, reminds me of my 2012 C class. The MMI is basically the same so it’s quite dated. One thing I loved about my E class was the one stalk design actually & loved having the gear selector as a stalk. The A class is a terrible car, got a Renault engine hasn’t it?

As for the beemers I can’t comment myself, my last Bmw was back in 2012. Exterior wise they a good looking car, would need to investigate more and go for a test drive.

Completely understand that the b8.5 & B9 is completely different. Wasn’t trying to compare the two, was just asking the question if anyone’s bought a Audi like me & quite quickly regretted it.

I have regretted buying certain Audi cars in the past yes - always when I've been impulsive. Usually for me it's a lack of factory fitted options as most of the brand's vehicles in basic 'poverty spec' lack cheap factory fit options like an 'interior light pack' that end up making a car so much easier to live with.

I've learned to look carefully before buying and if it isn't 100% perfect in every respect then move on - even up here in B9 RS territory a basic vehicle lacks stuff that really ought to be standard.

By being here you are likely keen on cars so by default you have to buy a car that makes you smile every time you start it - my departed RSQ3 was like that (now at Newbury Audi), no smile equals don't buy. This current Audi - also has the smile factor built in too (or maybe it's just gizmo confusion??).

Mercedes - lacks the interior technology that we take for granted in an Audi, until very recently the Merc sat-nav looked like Fisher-Price must have had a hand in design, the rest of it just looks dated and ugly. BMW are better but still someway behind where Audi are today.

So stick with Audi and buy something that makes you smile.

Agree with almost everything you’ve said apart from the part about the sat navs, which sat nav unit are you talking about? My previous E class had the comand system & personally i think it’s a better system than the one in my b8.5. Much easier to use, but I think the whole MMI on the merc was easier to use than the Audi.

Interior & spec is a big thing for me also. I certainly jumped into the A4 as I needed to get rid of the merc. Now slightly regretting jumping in, never done enough research.

I had that same feeling after getting mine. Lovely car but I just didn't find myself wanting to drive it for anything other than practical reasons.

Took me good 10k miles to gel with the car and there's still things I really dont like but but ive grown to appreciate it.

I realised Its a totally different car to the beamer. what it lacks in character it makes up for in comfort, refinement and ergonomics. Its a solid all rounder. Just doesn't put a smile on my face.

Think the S4 for me would be more of a complete package

Currently looking for my next car as i have been doing since last year

Pleased it’s not just me then, i probably only do 20/30 mile a week in the A4 so it will take me a lifetime to do 10k in it. The S4 would definitely been a better option for me also & looking at prices they were unexpectedly lower than I thought they would be. The wife’s now not travelling as far to work either so the S4 could now come into play. Would definitely need to be a B9 though.

Im considering a b8.5 S4. My next door neighbour has one just the sound it makes when she starts it up makes me smile! It'd be a big step down interior wise but think I could live it the comprise for a year or 2.

    335d another interesting option.

Have you got a B9 now? I wouldn’t recommend coming down to a b8.5 interior wise, the more I think about it the more dated it actually is. Especially compared to a B9. Friend of mine has 435D & it’s a brilliant car, beautiful inside and out. Like a rocket as well

Yea I have a B9 now interior wise its nice just feels a bit too clean/clynical much prefer the new merc interior but I cant stand their infotainment system and button layout.

Would kill for a 435d! drove one before and its a rocketship indeed! Out of my price range though but id take a decent specced 335d any day of the week!

I much prefer mercs interior, feels a lot classier. Got to be honest I prefer there infotainment system as well, I actually hate it on the B8.5. So complicated to work, especially through the steering wheel controls. Don’t like not having the option to just press a button to select a new radio station & it’s a fanny in if you want to set the infotainment to tell you more info about the radio station your listening to.

There’s a lot of Bmw 3/4’s kicking around with business media package which is a most for me if I’m going the route of BMW. Certainly going to have a good look at a 320 upto a 335. If I could get the 335 or even a 330 with a good spec & not a crazy price tag the Audi would most certainly be going.
The wife hasn’t really said much about the Audi but she knows I don’t like it, but soon as I mentioned going back to merc tonight she was full of chatter. She’s obviously not keen but didn’t want to say

Never regretted buying any of my cars. Maybe wished I’d waited/spent more for a bigger engine, but never any regrets. Doing plenty of research first on the models, options etc. and then how best to buy to minimise depreciation and cost (I’ve been doing 14-22k miles a year for last few years) has worked out so far for me.

Just don’t jump straight into something else because you want rid of your A4! Or you’ll perhaps feel the same way again in only a few months.

I've had a few that I regretted buying over the years - only problem is you lose too much changing in such a short period.

I bought a BMW 120d Coupe and after a couple of weeks wanted to change.. Ended up keeping it 8 months but still lost 4k when I traded it in.

no regrets on mine (s4) - i still find reasons to pop to the shops etc and drive it when there is no real need to do so.

Had a great time on the weekend. My mate who is an advanced trainer for paramedic drivers gave me a few lessons on a private road. it was a real eye opener. I have been approaching bends incorrectly for years. He was very impressed with the S4

I've had mine for 12m and love nearly all of it. The interior and the ride comfort and the satnav and the music and the space and the torque and the fuel economy and and. :positive: On balance it is a great car. No boy racer but mine is a child murdering diesel that will never thrill in the track day way.
However, I hate the s-tronic so much I've had it checked by Audi and they say it's ok, it isn't. It goes to sleep when I want to drive.:blue:
It needs more traction and I can see why they discontinued the FWD 3.0TDI
I can't see the fog light switches nor the rear wiper LED when I'm driving but I can live with those.

I came from a F31 335d. It's not a good car. It's a good drivetrain attached to a **** chassis and a below Mondeo quality interior. For £45k (make that £33k after massive discount) it is naff by comparison to the B9 or the Merc. No, it is naff even when compared to a Mondeo:puke2:. Noise, cheap plastics that wear out in 15 months, i-drive button from the local dairy, clangy doors and appalling halogen headlights are just not good enough at this price point. I really hope the G20 is better.

I have the same car as you I got mine with quattro (more for bragging rights that anything else) didn't know it comes as standard now. The gearbox is definitely the cars Achilles heel.

To be honest been hearing that a lot about the f30/f31 335d too. Not driven one so I cant commment but I had a 123d before this and it was a blast to drive. Logic is telling me that the 335 would be even better as its a similar engine just bigger but others dont seem to have the same view.

Still got a year left with the Audi so might be some good deals to be had on the G20 by that time.

Was considering a M140i/Golf R but I've become accustomed to the Audis practical side (big boot, lots of space upfront) and I have kids now so a saloon would be a better option

    Doing a half-hearted sale because I really fancy a Ducati Panigale V4S...

Only if I can get what I want for it though, which is probably right at the top of what it’s worth.

Pleased I made this post or I wouldn’t of known about the G20. Bmw is well & truly off the cards if I know they are bringing a new model out as I’d end up in exactly the same boat driving a car I find lacking compared to the newer generation. Looks like a trip to Audi for a B9

Mmm IMHO the 1 series is a far better proposition, mainly due to its target price but I also found it to be more refined than the F3*. The x-drive means SE suspension which is rubbbish. Mine was a lemon too but there's no excuse for the lack of refinement, poor IFE etc on a car at this price. 313 BHP is ok but it's not enough to make me like the car.

Don’t regret my A4 but I have fallen out of love with it, the gearbox has been a constant gripe of mine and I can’t see myself buying another Audi until they sort that out.

Will be saying goodbye to it in the next two weeks when my M140i arrives

One thing that annoys me the most is when I reverse off my drive & then pull away. It’s like you’ve got loads of play on the accelerator before the car reacts, but because your actually revving the engine when you do start to move it’s really aggressive.

Have you considered any of the DTUK products that has vastly helped a lot of members enjoy their cars more, such as the tuning box, TCU gearbox flash and pedal box?

I appreciate its more money (although you’ll lose quite a bit on trading in your A4 i imagine) and of course hesitation from some on warranty but for the money and the historical excellent track record on DTUK it could be money well spent and transform your car into something more enjoyable to drive.

I think what you're describing is actually just the time taken for the transmission to shift from drive to reverse. While it's in the process of doing this you can still rev the car and then the increased revs mean that when it does shift to drive it will want to take off all of a sudden. My advice would be to just give it a second between shifting to drive and actually hitting the accelerator. Think about how long it would take you to shift from reverse to 1st in a manual car and that should allow it to sort itself out.

Reduction in power is no doubt a big part here. The engine is the soul of the car. However sparkly an interior nothing beats the pure physical work of a strong engine vs. a weaker one!

The interior of your car makes you smile? For me its the engine, a 5.5litre supercharged V8 or a 4.7litre twin turbo V8 make me smile. :superman:

I was pretty disappointed with the S4 during the first 6 months of ownership. The overall quality and suspension was much better than the previous M235i but my last car was 30bhp up and nearly 200kg lighter. After running in the Audi it still felt quite slow, muffled, unresponsive and sluggish.

So I fitted a downpipe, DTUK piggyback and transmission software, now I love it!

There has to be a balance especially if its a daily.

Things like heated seats, nice sound system, ambient lighting make the car a much better place to be when your not blasting along b roads.

I often find myself looking at the Mercedes AMG cars to replace my S5 but I do still love the shape of the sportback. Maybe a 3rd car will be in my garage before too long, I own a Mercedes SL500 as well.
