Any way to check if an ECU has been locked?

I want to switch my tune to a Dynospectrum DS1 (so I can be cool like T-1000), but I have heard tell that my tuner locks the ECU and that may be an issue re-flashing the ECU with the DS1, or interfere with some of its features, and possibly make it so the ECU is not recoverable if things go sideways.

So I'm wondering what tools would be required to read the ECU and see if it has been secured or not? Does anyone here know or what tools are needed to check this status? Can it be done with ODIS? Or Does it need a tuning tool such as autotuner/CMD etc?

I realise the easiest way is to go back to my original tuner, but for various reasons I'd really rather not and would prefer to find another tuner, or the tools to check this myself before I make the switch.

Have you asked Dyno Spectrum ?? You should be able to flash back to stock and then flash the DS1 system. Your original tuner may have made it so their tuning can not be read but highly unlikely that they would make it so the ECU can not be returned to stock.

Whenever a ECU is flashed there is a risk that it will lock-up/be bricked, even when updating stock file.

Thanks for the reply Dan. Dynospectrum forums were not all that helpful, and said I should have the tuner flash it back to stock, and that it the boot password was changed it would cause issues with recovery (if needed) and may effect some of the more advanced and beta features. Others said it "should" overwrite my existing tune ok. Its just not good enough to take a risk of bricking the ECU as I'm a long way from any help if that happens. A well known tuner has also said that my tuner does in some cases change the boot password. I'm not sure if that effect a ECU flash or not? But I would like to confirm if possible if there is additional security before I make a substantial investment in the DS1, mess up my exiting tune, or do any damage to the ECU. Is there any way to check this?

There is always a way to check but likely to need specialist tools and I think opening up the ecu, which has risks.

Sounds like asking your tuner to return it to stock is the best option.

Best to reset to stock via MRC.

Then go the Dyno Spectrum route.

Lol sorry but what’s cool ?

I chose to go a different route that’s all.

It's not really a good option to take the car to the original tuner and have it flashed back to stock as they are hundreds of miles away, have not answered a single enquiry about this, or adjustments my existing tune which has been rather frustrating. On top of that my car is decatted and stage 2, so it won't run well, if at all until a new tune is flashed and if that goes poorly in their car park they aren't likely to be helpful - and me being far from home... and I'd like to stay in their good books encase I blow anything up in future :)

I think my easier option is to buy a new stock ECU and work from that, but I'm not sure what the implications are for mismatched milages and parts and such if I have it replaced? Is things something any shop with ODIS can do, or is it a trip to the dealer to collect my TD1 flag ?

If you are thinking of a new ECU then why not try the flash to stock anyway ?
@DJAlix may be able to assist.

Just incase it all goes wrong. Historically speaking this is pretty likely with me pushing the buttons :)

Will keep my existing ECU just in case.

If interested in an ECU I have one that is like new. I purchased it new and used it for just 4 months just before I sold my RS3. Perfect for your needs and suitable for FL RS3 67 plate onwards. Its just a paper weight for me at present for if you are interested please DM me and we can discuss further. DJAlix @ Vagcarcoding assisted me so should be able to help you.

Would you mind PM'ing me? I don't seem to have the ability. Maybe I don't have enough posts or time on the forum yet.
