Another battery problem! i think?

Hi here is my problem, my battery goes flat in 8 hours it is a brand new battery the ampage that is being drawn is fluctuating between 1.7 and 2.6 amp/hour. ive had fitted a new central conv unit so this should not be the problem althow it is showing 28 faults on vag com. These seem to be supply voltage, single wire operation and intermittent problems my key fob wont open the car and the alarm keeps going off. pulling the 2 fuses for the conv seems to reduse the amps drawn so i think there is as short some where, but i have ripped the car to bits to to check the wiring but see no problems! The car is a 1.8t cab 2003 are there any common faults? any ideas?
Thanks Nathan

What is VAG-COM showing after a DTC reset? Perhaps you can post the log after a reset and drive?

Was the Convenience Module fitted correctly - i.e. correctly coded for you car.
If yes then your keyfob should open/close the car? A VAG-COM scan will tell you what's setting off the alarm too.

Can't remember off hand what normal draw of current is when all calmed down - i.e. ignition off and semi-sleep mode (Hazard switch goes off after a couple of minutes upon locking), but it should be mA and not A as you indicate.

Do you have SatNav (RNS-E) with retrofitted TV Tuner or any type of Bluetooth phone kit (Audi or otherwise), any other electrical accessory. If any are fitted incorrectly i.e. without ignition enable feed, they can quickly drain your battery - especially in this cold spell.

Lets see the scan log!

The car is in stock form the dtc's were read after the old ones were erased vag com tells me that the alarm is being activated by doors, roof, center consoll near enough every detector. i also have missfire problems but dont think these are related. the central conv is main dealer part fitted by me. keys were programed they did open the car but now have stopped they still show up as programed but dont work! Will have to post the dtc list as soon as i can work out how to do it. sorry my mistake it is ma and not amps.

sorry my mistake it is ma and not amps.

So are you saying that the current drain is 1.7~2.6mA/hr?
If YES, then this is acceptable.

With VAG-COM you can save the logs after doing a "Auto-Scan" or specific "Module Scan". Open up these text file logs and simply "cut & paste" into the respective thread response.

Hope these DTCs are some help theres a lot of them had to print and then scan as could not find where the logs were stored after saving them

Logs are stored as "txt" files in the installation directory, similar to c:\program files\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Logs. (I actually have mine installed directly on c drive, i.e. c:\Ross-Tech\VCDS\Logs)

Assuming you have a RHD vehicle for the UK, one would assume the [46] Convenience Module coding should be 06795 and not 06666?
(Minimum and proper coding in red and marked with * below)

  • +00001 = GB-Alarm (not USA)
  • +00002 = Confirmation Anti-Theft Warning System (Blink)*
  • +00004 = Selective Central Locking (SCL)
  • +00008 = Anti-Theft Warning System*
  • +00016 = Rear Lid Release Locking at 5 km/h
  • +00032 = Central Locking at 15 km/h (or 10 mph)
  • +00064 = Comfort Function via Remote Control (not USA)
  • +00128 = Right Hand Drive (RHD)*
  • +00256 = Avant
  • +00512 = Confirmation Close via Remote (1x Blink)*
  • +01024 = Confirmation Anti-Theft Warning Sytem Horn Activation
  • +02048 = Door-/Window Regulator Logic*
  • +04096 = Thatcham Anti-Theft Warning (not USA)*
  • +08192 = No Safe-Function
  • +16384 = Side Windows with Insulated Glass
I am basing this on an 8E coding although yours is an 8H Cabriolet and cant find the differences on the Ross-Tech site.

What did you base your coding on? Please check you have the correct value set.

Are you sure the DTC's were cleared with a good supply voltage - i.e. is your battery up to full charge - there are too many "Supply Voltage Too Low" problems on various modules. Make sure battery is fully charged and all fuses in the fuse box are good.

Do a "AutoScan" of all modules, save the log, do a DTC reset, which in turn will automatically do a fresh scan. Save the new log, then let's see the new Log.

dont think it makes much difference if its a cab but not sure, anyway mines a b6 cab so heres my code which is a stable one so try it on yours.

The important factor which both "1wheelonly" coding and my coding have in common is +00001 GB Alarm (not USA), and RHD which is +00128.
So try 06795 in the coding as suggested before - Remember to clear the DTC's after re-coding.

There are different modules in the doors for driver and passenger sides - maybe the RHD sorts which one is addressed correctly.

woorlord, mines rhd and im in uk ????

And we are coded correctly!

"A4 nut" is not if he has a RHD UK spec car - he needs to change his coding and add 128+1 to 6666 = 6795.
Then we need to see what happens with the DTC's.

Hi tried both sets of coding also been on rosswiki to work the coding out again put new batterys in calculator this time LOL i come to 6795 but 7851 works and gives me doors locking above 10 mph and assume more features. Ive now deleted the DTCs and i get 4 come back 2 are for rear doors which i dont have, and 2 are for the front doors saying door control module: drivers side (j386) 49-10-no communications - intermittent. But the battery has only had a few hours charge so need to wait to see if the battery holds the charge or else im back to the original fault.

a4 nut, if youve entered my code then you should get beep when arming/ locking up.
are you getting this ?
are your interior lights going out as soon as you lock up ?
is the warning triangle going out after about 10-20 seconds.
if your saying that its giving you errors for rear doors, just woundering if its thinking there open and not shutting down completely, causing drain.
if you have the beep active with the indicator flash on lock and it doesnt beep then that is recognising a problem and not allowing it to go to sleep.
does this make sense ? thats to you and woorlord.

06795 was based on your programmed code of 06666 which was assumed to be the features nearest your target coding. 07851 will give the extra features you've worked out plus "Blip" on arm of alarm.

Also, note from 28 faults down to 4 is progress - just need to isolate these 4.

Show the latest "4 error" log for the Conv Module - Easier to see what exactly is reported, lets all see what the actual problems are and we may be able to relate to similar experiences.

good point woor, how did 06666 come about, was this the coding originally of the old module, cant see it

Was thinking that also but was not sure if the rear quarter light windows behind the doors are powered via a controller and how they operate?
Channel 61 provides info on manual/electric winders for rear.

rear quater windows are electric and do a certain cycle when roof is operated so im guessing that they are controlled from module/controller

Hi, Thanks for your input so far been very useful & think the two codes are both fine & work well.
The 06666 code came from an internet 'ask any question we have an expert site' (not much of an expert) Don't really think that my problem is coding but I'm going back to the original problem of the battery going flat within 8 hours. I went to the place I brought my battery from today & they checked it, it came out fine drop tested it fine, only thing left was to check the draw they confirmed my original figures of 1.7-2.6 amps/hour yes amps not ma.
This would be the reason why the battery is going flat so fast, being as I had already ripped all the panels out of my car to get to the wiring they started unplugging & found that my glove box light was permanently on. Now they have got it down to 0.8 amps that is still too high, now for the faults I have experienced:
Dash/clocks not illuminating
Rear heat not coming on
Indicators slow operation
Windscreen wipers not working
Most interior electrics not working
After 10 mins of driving these correct themselves as if the battery has been charged.
After I have deleted all fault codes if I start the engine & keep it running at around 2000rpm I get no fault codes so it makes me think all central conv faults are related to my battery problem?
I have been told that I have to unplug every module & switch until I can get the amps down to 0.3ish to find out what is the offending item.
The only common fault I have had throughout is the central locking being sporadic & the warning triangle illuminated but if the central locking works the triangle does go out otherwise it is permanently on. Are there any ideas of what to unplug & am I going about this problem the right way by trying to solve my battery problem before sorting out any central conv issues?
Thanks to everyone so far for their input

:

I would try unplugging the following modules and measure the current draw from the battery before and after removal. Try the easiest one first followed by the others:

1.) Unplug cables to doors on A-pillar, driver then passenger. (undo rubber boot and then release plug there is a small release lug on the back of the connector - these connectors are packed with a water repellant grease might be worth checking.)
2.) Power Control Module - under steering wheel to right under fuse box. Flat module, plugs underneath unit. This deals with all the lights and windscreen wipers, dash illumination, etc.
3.) Convenience Module - remove it completely. (responsible for Alarm / Elec. windows / Elec. Mirrors / Footwell lights / central locking.)
4.) Unplug Radio (Double DIN?? - only to get access to A/C next!)
5.) Unplug A/C unit (if single DIN Radio this pulls out easy!)

See what this does to the battery current draw, before considering other modules?

Another thought - are your floor carpets completely dry around convenience module - no water leaks though your pollen filter / air intake making it damp down there or around the a-pillar connection points????
