Right then,

Firstly, for all those unsure about remapping, DO IT! You will not regret it, and secondly, I would highly recommend AMD in Thurrock Essex.

If like me, you were unsure about a remap and concerned about some the of issues mentioned on this and other forums e.g. Poor running, damage to engine, reduced engine/clutch/car life and worst of all, lack of support, then you were probably pulling your hair out trying to decide. Also I wondered why the manufacturer didn't make the stage one standard?
After a lot of deliberation, I chose to go head with the stage one remap, reasoning that the manufacturer had to sell as many cars as possible and to do that, have to make it as attractive to as large as possible market. So fuel economy and more importantly emissions take a higher priority than outright performance also, can you imagine remapping every car!!!

So now I'm remapping, but how? Do I choose Revo, Unicorn developments, shark, Superchips Etc? And what about the tuner? Custom or generic map? Rolling road or not? Lots of choices and decision.

In the end I decided to go to someone who could provide me with everything and wasn't a million miles from me. I chose AMD in Essex because of their reputation, location, custom map and rolling road. ( They also support a BTCC car )

When the day arrived, I was crapping myself. All my doubts and fears were coming back however, after having all my concerns and doubts answered in a positive, informative and in a non condescending manor. I explained that I was after more torque than outright power and more mid range and for it not to drop off so quickly, also in wanted my DV changed to a DV+.I left my car in their hands.
I didn't want to pre empt what the car would be like in case i was disappointed.

A few hours later, I was back at reception having a summary of the remap explained to me, given a printout of the rolling road and assurance that if I had any problems however unlikely, to call them and they'd get me in.
So I sat in my now chipped car, key in the ignition and paused just before starting....I then turned the key.
It started! Phew, I put it into first, now for the drive...... And what a drive, I couldn't believe how good it felt, it performed exactly as I had asked for more torque, very little loss of boost between gear changes and power until redline, I was over the moon, I even managed to get the traction light to come on in 1st gear whilst pulling away from the Dartford Toll!!! It also pulled 6th like a proper gear and after I had calmed down, it still returned the same fuel economy.

So if you are thinking about a remap, DO IT! And go with any reputable tuner, I highly recommend AMD, and don't forget to tell them what you want but don't let price be the deciding factor. And if you look after the car e.g. Warming up/cooling down, you shouldn't have any issues with a Remap

If you think AMD does mapping then you're being misleaded ! All they do is read your flash, send it in a email to one of their company that their mapping tools are slaved to (Revo, Viezu, etc.) then flash it on the dyno and check the car for fault codes or overboost conditions- this is called "logging"...If the car throws codes then they email logs back and their tuner tweaks the map a little till they are happy no fault codes are shown whilst the car is on dyno

! Only way to do a custom map is by logging Intake Air Temps and Eexhaust Gas Temps then tweak the map according to the mods, engine condition, etc ! It does not happen in a day though, especially if you add big injectors, big turbo, intercooler, fuel pump, etc ! Generic maps are one size fits all and i have seen a couple of tunes even from big names which had wrong values and wrong requests and 2-3 maps tweaked if that ! If you want a true map then always go for a specialist tune as they know them models in depth, when you hear someone is good with diesels then they rarely are good with petrols as well !

Mate, I was told that they don't use Revo anymore and that they use custom maps, maybe the definition of custom is different?
Mine was a stage 1 on a standard 2.0 Tfsi, should I be concerned about the AMD map? What are the signs of a poor map?

Chris the OP went for a stage 1 map so just a basic remap of a standard engine. AMD are a good tuner and do a lot of cars as well as development work on the tuning so there maps are hopefully liable to be issue free and proven. If you have made several modifications to your car and want the best out of it then a custom tune is the way to go, but it isn't very often that you get the person mapping the car being the person who writes the maps. When I was looking to get my car done AMD was one place on the list in the end I went with Rick at Unicorn as he writes the maps, we must have logged, read, modded and wrote at least a dozen maps to the car to get it how I wanted it.
And Rick is very good with Petrol engine tuning more so than diesels, but as he says and I agree it's very easy to get power from a diesel compared to a petrol, more difficult to get it done correctly but if you truly understand the processes involved then you can do a good job.

AMD are a big name in VAG tuning I wouldn't be worried with one of their maps. Poor mapping will usually cause engine management lights to come on or the car to go into limp mode.
With the 2.0 TFSI engine there are some tuners claiming big numbers for the remaps and I would be a little worried that maybe some of them are pushing the components a little hard to get that power. What did yours map too. ?

Yes Karl, i understand what you're talking about however "stage 1" in yank talk is just a generic map with a few values raised boost/timing and fueling values, however to get the best from OP's car it's best to modify the right tune off the ECU, they are also "generic" from factory- "one size fits all" ! However, to get a nice map from a particular model it needs many, many hours of dyno or street driving in order to get the right blend of performance, low EGT and reliability ! What AMD promotes as "custom" is far, far from the truth, not bashing their work or price listing but i had to fix loads of their's (and others for example) work before and i am not a tuner ! 95% of British folk does not take their car for a leisurely 220 Km/h drive on autobahn to try their new tune, the 5% that do usually catch a ride on the back of a recovery truck !

Karl,
Thanks for the info, mine, according to AMD's graph is 255 bhp and 278lbft torque, it drive very well and the only difference is a slight vibration at idle but that might change with a few fill ups and cold starts. Overall I'm very happy and not really interested in Vmax.
