AJ's Allroad

After a brief stint in a 3 series tourer decided it was time to get myself back into an Audi, no way I was doing another winter in a rwd car!! Had an A4 B7 avant a couple years ago that I got slightly carried away with modifications, it was a great car but could do with something larger than an A4 now. The hunt began for an A6 and started looking at allroads, more of them I saw the more I liked them. Eventually found one in Belfast that ticked every box and had everything I was looking for so took a flight over to Scotland to pick it up. First impressions, awesome car!! Streets ahead of the BM in refinement and the driving experience, If I'm honest I'm actually quite shocked at how good a car it is. 272bhp is more than ample for me and still got 50mpg on the journey home with a good mix of different conditions, over the moon with it.

Quick couple of snaps on the way to the ferry,

And some of my other Audi, Coupe quattro with 4.2 V8 from an S8. It's almost finished, just really needs mapping and it'll be good to use.

Thanks mate, Yeah all done at home, outside by myself except the respray. Just short of 3 yrs work, full rebuild. Thought I'd finished it 18mths ago but the original 2.8 motor was chronic so ripped it out and went for the V8.

Thanks mate. Yip, tornado grey

Mine too but it’s just a saloon. That colour is rare in Ireland and I didn’t see many advertised on Uk sites when I was looking.

Daytona grey was my initial choice but I think the Tornado grey was the best now that I have it.

Well wasn't planning on modifying the allroad but the urge has taken over common sense :headbang:

Not going crazy on this one as I will eventually be using it for my work so it will have to go up farm tracks etc in all weathers so need to keep that in mind.

Just been tinkering away with it in the last few weeks, It's covered in tar spots and quite a lot of fallout down the sides plus what ever muck the dealer's applied to it.
I've never seen a set of tyres so heavily covered in tyre shine, about 50% of it had coated the side of the car. Don't really have the patience or the time to fully detail a car these days so just been doing a panel or two a day, fallout remover, wash, clay, wash then quick spray of detailer until I get the time to polish it properly.

Treated it to a new set of rubber mats, pressed plates, preloaded sim card so I can use google maps/earth etc and a vcds cable.

Never used vcds before but there's plenty of guides online to keep me right, started with easy stuff like needle sweep, rear lights on with the drl's and switched off the handbrake lock if not wearing seatbelt and some other wee bits and bobs. Got a bit braver and lopped 20mm off the ride height, looks better, rides like a dream and still goes higher than I'll need in allroad mode.

Plans, love the interior but not really liking the light headliner so bought a black one, just need to find the rest of the trim. Seats aren't my cup of tea so looking around at options. In prep for it being the work wagon I'll probably get some dash cams and the only thing I miss from the BMW, a reverse camera. I'm coping with the amount of chrome on it but find myself wondering what it would look like as a black edition allroad.........

Ajax1976, I recently came from an A4 Avant to a 2015 A6 Allroad.
I'm planning to de-chrome various parts too and was hoping you could answer a few questions for me.

What grille did you replace the stock one with? I understood that Allroad grilles were unique and you'd need to modify avant grilles to fit?

Did you buy a pair of 'black edition' roof bars or were they wrapped/painted?

I hope you're still doing the mods anyway mate, be interested in how you've managed so far as the various online C7 allroad communities I've come across doesn't seem to do much in the way of cosmetic changes... Frustrating!

I replaced the grill with a s line one, If your cars a face lift (C7.5) it's a straight swap, if it's an early C7 then I think you'll struggle to find an alternative.

I got the roof bars from German Ebay, they are factory black ones, well dark grey. I'm not actually sure what car they are off, black edition ones are flush fitting but these ones share the same profile as the Allroad ones.

I got the chrome wrapped around the window trims and that made a huge difference, I did play with wrapping the stainless bits on the sills and bumpers but it didn't look good so removed it, the chrome trim on the boot got ditched as well.

I got the black headliner in and all the black trim, that turned out quite expensive but it's transformed the interior, love it. Other than that I've not done much recently, got Carplay enabled and fitted dash cams as I use it for work now.

Your window surrounds look great, i'll definitely do that first!

I gather you did you headlining at the same time as your roof bars? Was it a fiddly, pig of a job or was it just time consuming? Don't suppose you have a part number for those bars would you?

My car is a bit if wierd one. It's a 15 plate (LS15...) and has facelift rear lights but the headlamps are just standard xenons. I've spoken to various forums and opinions vary as to whether the car is a C7 or C7. 5... Confusing.

Facelift car. Led headlamps are options on allroad unless sport which was standard

That's good news..!

So I need to find me an A6 black edition sline grille... Do you think maybe 2013 onwards?

Ajax1976, I finally got the window surrounds done and it looks the business!

I'm now looking at buying a set of black/grey roof rails but am still to find anything about removing the headliner of a C7 A6 allroad.

I know you were replacing the entire headliner anyway, so it must've made sense to change the rails then, but in your experience, do you think I need to take the whole thing off or do you think I can just unclip certain parts (i.e. The pillars and hand holds etc) to get the rails in?

Sorry for the long winded question... Not much online apart from people's opinions about difficult it is.

It's definitely do able just by removing the grab handles etc, you might have to pop the pillar covers off to let it drop enough but they're easy enough to remove. I did the rails on my A4 B7 without dropping the headliner and that wasn't that hard, It shared exactly the same means of attachment as the A6. Just take your time, once free the headliner will drop enough to get tools in just don't force it as if you crease it you'll not be able to hide it.
I checked back my Ebay purchases, part numbers are 4G9860021B and 4G9860022B for the rails. I paid 150euros delivered, there were loads of them on Ebay.de when I got mine, think the germans prefer the chrome ones.

More photos please of the car Ducka4!

Also might look at this, dechroming is something that I have on the list on things to do.

1FHW I only did the window surrounds and the rear boot strip, so not much for inspiration for the moment!

Here are some pics anyway

AJ , I was wondering how you were getting on with the 20mm drop on the car. I’m looking to do mine but was wondering if there was any issues?

No real issues at all, haven’t managed to ground it yet and wheels still clear the arches(spacers fitted too). I visit farms etc quite a lot with my work and I still have enough height when I raise it to keep out of trouble. The higher bumpers on the allroad definitely help, there’s been times when I thought I’d catch the front bumper when going up and down steep slopes but it’s cleared them. It’s actually a very capable car off road even on normal tyres, had it down wet fields and still manages to pull itself out.

That’s brilliant and good to know. Currently trying to get someone to do mine up here that I trust. Don’t want to be messing it up!
