Hi guys,

I have a T reg 1999 Audi A4 1.8T Sport and my airbag light came on the other day .... I have VAG-COM 311.2 and 409.11 but for some reason its not finding the control module (Address 45 I believe). It finds all the others as below:

Does anyone have any ideas, or even better does anyone else have a VAGCOM near by that I could test on also?

I was certain that Vagcom could reset the airbag light or even better, tell me whats up... all plugs under the seats look good...

I'm thinking just taking it to an Audi Dealership might be simpler...

Cheers

Andy

Hi Andy
Airbag is 15 m8
Very common on these are the plugs under the seat, unplug the plug and clean out with contact cleaner and reconnect and reset airbag light and should do the trick, but of course check the fault memory first may have nothing to do with the seat airbags

You seem to use a 3rd party interface and this is pretty much the problem why you are having problems communicating. As you can see in Address 08 (A/C System) VAG-COM has problems to connect and quits with a baud synch message, this is a clear sign for "dumb" interface hardware (usually low quality 3rd party). Of course it could also be that the airbag module is completely dead, but this is very rare.

I went and tried mine
goto 15m it may not connect and a prompt will come up saying turn off ignition follw the on screen advice and then it should let you in!
If not know anyone else with vag-com??
or dealer it is

Hello chaps

Well lo and behold it did finally find it, and it was address 15 not 45. I have cleared the fault but it came back again this morning. Stupid old me forgot to make a note of the fault but I do remember it saying something like "resistance too low"

I'm going to go and check it out again in a mo... I've been told slowing down the baud rate may make the other controllers respond... because yes, I am using a 3rd party cable (usb), but I couldnt justify forking out $249 for the whole kit...

Any other thoughts?

Cheers

Andy.

Ok, just been outside and done another AutoScan on the B5 Chassis. Its weird, the "autoscan" doesnt find Address 15, but selecting that module on its own does... below are the results:

I deliberately havent cleared the fault yet as I wanted your opinion(s) on what the most likely cause is... It seemed to re-appear as my girlfriend adjusted the seat as she was driving... so I'm guessing loose wire/dirty contact...

Cheers for your advice

This is the most common fault, clean the plugs up under the seat and that should do the trick....if not you may need a new airbag complete..!!

Clean the contacts..and if you got your own vag-com just keep resetting it, it will come on every so often if it comes on.

I got 3rd party USB £15.oo from US and paid $99 to reg..dose the trick nicely!

Cheers for the info... I'll give it a go in a moment..

Yes marmite, exactly the same situ as me... bought a lead from ebay for £17 and then registered for $99. Just received my new activation code for 409.11 and that works too...

Just wondering about altering the baud rate to see if I can get the other controllers to communicate with the Vag-com.

.. and lastly... do you know what connectors under the seat need disconnecting/cleaning? or should I just disconnect every plug I can find, clean them and put them back?

Cheers

Andy

Airbag fault codes are NOT supposed to be cleared unless you are really sure you fixed the issue, so just clearing them definitly isn't allowed by VW/Audi specs. Faulty airbag units are not very common, but if you are unsure give the car to a dealer, they do have special airbag test equipment. Also check the control module measuring blocks while checking the connectors.

Airbag plugs are normally yellow
Seb is right go into measure blocks and you will get the status of the airbag.

Reseting the light is more if you have to keep cleaning..your right Seb should fix the fault not just delete it...99% time it is the wiring..Some people have removed the wring from the plug and connected them together illimanting the plug(the week Point) it normaly the movement of the seat and the build up of dirty under the seay.
Used to see alot of this when the cleaners cleaned the cars after service and moved the seats back and forward to clean around them

Good luck

Seb / Marmite

Agree completely... I dont want to just "reset" the light either if the issue is more severe.. but the way I see it, is that I need to clean the connectors, put them back together and then clear the fault and wait to see if it re-appears again...

..surely that is the correct way forward in resolving the issue based on fault codes I currently have?

Cheers

A.

give it ago buddy.
That should do the trick!

Good luck
