Air Con not working

Hi All, I need some info.
I've just found out my A/C is not working and have checked the fuses and all is ok, however the compressor is not engaging.
Is this due to lack fluid or charge or is something more deeper?

To me it sounds like lack of gas.....I know the early A/C pumps would work with or without gas in them causing damage, but as far as I'm aware all the newer A/C systems have pressure sensors in them preventing them from working if the gas gets too low.

It easier me spending your money telling you to get it checked out with a recharge but that would be my first port of call.
