Hey All,

My 2016 Audi A4 Avant had an Adble issue whereby the countdown started happening - I then noticed the engine warning light came on. After filling the tank with Adblue (only about 6 liters) the Adblue light and engine warning were still there.

I took the car to a local VAG Specialist and he called me back with the bad news.

It needs a new pump - but he said the pump was part of the tank and it also needs a new Adblue tank ecu.

Total of £1200.

Does this seem right to you?

Thanks in advance.

Edd

Hmm so the tank, pump and ecu all fail and need replacing at the same time?

I would be concerned about the quality of the "diagnosis". Sounds a little bit like they are throwing parts at it to me.
It could be correct but I would want them to fully justify what they think has gone wrong, and why/how they have arrived at their conclusions.

£1200 is expensive but not a total shock given the usual prices of Audi spares, I'd be searching breakers/ebay/Facebook marketplace etc for some used parts to cut costs.

Hey - Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, the pump & tank on this model is part of the same sealed unit.

The guy said that if the updated ECU is not fitted then there are issues.

The annoying thing is I had 90 miles left this morning and used 20 miles to get to the garage, so after that runs out the car will not start.

Most independents and all Audi Dealers are now closed so there is nowhere else to go!

Yeah i had read that thread last night - The error was low pressure i think so the Adblue was not getting through.

I had given him the go-ahead this morning - as Audi are locked down it doesnt help me!

You’re not a key worker by chance? They’re still open for them.

No Worse Luck! It was a good drive back. Was only getting 39mpg before - Now the AdBlue is sorted I am getting 56mpg.

No sure what it should be getting but that seems ok to me!

Thanks, Edd

Good that you got it sorted out, have you retained the removed assemblies, I hope so, and now log this issue with Audi UK including why you took the only repair route open to you and request that they consider a good will payment for the parts bought, this sort of problem should not be happening without some good will from the manufacturer, make sure they understand these are difficult times and your repair route was the only one open to you so that you get everything written down in your letter of contact with Audi UK, and make sure that you have some form of confirmation that Royal Mail did get it through their mailbox.

Edit:- I did, some time ago, have a look at my local Audi dealership's website, a multi franchise group as usual, and they did appear to claim that while that branch was closed, they were retaining the ability to repair "broken" cars and if I fed in the marque I was interested in, their website would direct me to my nearest repair workshop - now with your problem, it seems that you would not have been able to travel that far, but maybe check that out before writing a letter to Audi as you don't want to give them an excuse for quickly issuing a firm/final NO!

I have seen the parts taken out and emailed the garage to ask him to keep them, going to log a call with Audi and see what i can do.

It seems strange for something to fail so soon - and also the new pump is a revised part so Audi new there was an issue with it.

Tetbury Audi is only doing public worker jobs and that is by appointment.

Also am i posting in the correct part of the forum - My car is a 2016 Audi A4 - What model revision is that?

Same issue for me, same price.
For a local service pump around £700+tank around £120plus the work.
Not so reliable parts looks like Audi...

same issue for me 2017 A4 45000kms adblu pump gone quoted 2000euro to fix but Audi supplying parts still costing me a grand , think its time to say goodbye to Audis expensive to by and fix and not so reliable

Turns out it was the control module for mine....they want £1048 to replace it!!

Told them I don't expect an electrical module like this to suddenly fail with such low mileage, when it's something completely unaffected by driving, or driving style.

I also don't think £1048 is a fair price to change a control module that is held in by 2 screws and 1 electrical connector either! Especially when I have a full dealer history, and always been loyal in this regard despite many problems with Audi dealerships - Apparently I am not eligible for any good will!

Been waiting for the past day from a call back from them after they have discussed again with management if they are prepared to help further.

One thing is for certain, if they don't budge on price this will be the last time the car sees an official dealership, it's coming up to 5 years old, and this is the longest I've carried on with dealer servicing before, in the hope of good will if I needed it, and convenience of courtesy cars. They won't even give courtesy cars at the moment, if they won't give good will either there is no point.......I need a service in June, including brake fluid, and cambelt, so well over a grands worth of work they will be losing straight away

Had mine done on Extended Warranty (38k so pretty low mileage also). They said the bill would have been closer to £700. So £1048 does sound excessive!? Maybe try another dealer?

Hi, the unit control price is around £600 brand new, you can buy it from VW/Audi and also you can choose to buy an used one, around £90 - £120 on ebay, and also the unit control will required to be programmed for your car.
In my case the code for unit control was this one 4M0907355B, but can be different sometimes, depends on what kind of software it has, mine had software version 0005. If you are around London, i can help you out with a good mechanic for programming, the one who resolved my one.

Thanks all. They called me and said I just need to pay £450 and they will contribute the rest

Happy with that

Result! .. That's more like it!

I post this for info of other members

My Audi A6 (9/15 registered with 111k on clock) showed 2 warning lights – Yellow Emission Control Fault & White AdBlue spanner saying ‘No restart in 600 miles’

Strange since I had just filled up AdBlue the prev week

My Audi Master Mechanic advises today that the sensor on the AdBlue pump has failed, showing a much higher pressure reading that actual & which is prob causing the Emissions warning light – & that the whole sealed unit pump needs to be replaced at cost of £800 inc Vat + labour

Then read your website – called Audi UK today 0800 699888, whose Manager advised fault must be diagnosed at an Audi centre & repairs done by an Audi centre etc, otherwise any good will payment towards the cost of the part (which is not guaranteed or quantified at this stage) will not be considered

Since no certainty of getting any goodwill and much, much longer time delays to get car back on the road, I decided to bite the bullet & get repairs done in 3 days time by my independent Audi Master Mechanic

So I recently got the dreaded ad blue fault (no restart 2000mi)

I bought 5L of the stuff, poured it in and reset all the faults using obd11. A day later it came back with 750mi no restart!

Plugged in obd11, got a whole barrage of faults… pressure too high and too low, no comms with module, metering unit as well as a few others. Oh dear…

Took it to my regular mechanic (not audi specialised) he told me off, said that I should always refill it to the top before resetting the faults and SCR metering unit. We did try a full tank and reset to no success… he told me I probably broke my system. I would need an electrician or some sort of programming expert with the relevant tools as a last ditch effort.

I went home and sat for hours trying all sorts with obd11, I narrowed it down to the pump not working as it wasn’t drawing any current while the signal was being sent. I admitted defeat and booked in with an Audi Indy specialist.

Two days before I was scheduled to drop the car off for diagnostics (I’m at 150mi no restart) the ad blue wrench disappeared and the check engine light remained, no mention of “no restart”. This was short lived as later that day it came back but I was back to 750mi again!

Oh well.

Then, the day before I’m dropping the car off, the ad blue fault went off again, and stayed off for the rest of the day. I decide to plug in obd11 and see what’s happening, the car had some of the previous faults as before but when checking the output signals, the pump is drawing 0.5A and going at 1500 rpm, pressure was reading about 5000 hPa. The range is back up to 21000km.

I decided to reset all the faults and see how it goes.

I’m a week in and so far so good *fingers crossed*

I did another scan a few days in and only the pressure low fault had appeared once the day after the latest reset.

I’ll update if anything changes.

It’s crazy this is coming up again. Must be a wider issue as not many people will post here. This part doesn’t seem to hold up.

Same thing happening with my 2016 A4 B9 Avant. Warning lights both for the Adblue and for the engine keep going on and off. The tank seems like 25l in capacity, so I top it out first. I've just cleared the errors with my obd11 and waiting to see what will happen next.

I’m currently in the dreaded AbBlue fault nightmare with my 2017 A4 Avant. Took it into Audi last month and was advised that pump/tank and ECU all need replacing, quote £2681!!! Was informed that there was a 2 week backlog on delivery of parts. A month in and little to no correspondence from Audi. I contacted them today to be told that they are still awaiting parts and that the ETA is end of Apr. Reading through the thread, is it abnormal to replace both parts? Feels like Audi are just trying to fleece me.

Honest opinion: Audi techs are useless. Their blanket solution is to swap parts out until it’s fixed. No actual diagnostic or “repair” is prescribed.

Have you tried my solution? I’m over 2000mi since it’s reared it’s ugly head and still fine. Need to find the time to plug my obd11 in to see if there are any faults.

Same thing happening to me at the moment with my 2016 2.0 TDI B9 Avant. I'm thinking of disabling the adblue system in the engone control unit. Too expensive to replace and repair.

Hello,
I have an Audi A4 B9 2.0TDI seams that my AdBlue system start to fail on me to, I have engine light on and from time to time start appear "AdBlue Fault. No restart in 650 mile" this error in dashboard appear only when i drive, after the car is stop and start again the error is not there anymore, but engine light is still there.

So today i was on my local garage for a check and they check the AdBlue Injector on engine bay and clean all the electric jack's from the AdBlue tank (under the car), they test the pump and sometimes is working and sometimes is not and the cable that is going from tank to injector to engine and look like adblue arrive there.
The conclusion was that they will try to check what is the problem actually and from where this problem start in first place because for them was very strange that the pump work and cables the same but on tester they have error codes, and they don't want to put to change something till they don't know for sure what is the real problem.
I leave attach for you guys maybe you someone has any clue.

Could you share how do you read SCR pump pressure and current with OBD11?

I have seen something about SCR in Live data, but non of them was SCR pump pressure.

Thank you.

I've just had this issue on my 2017 Avant which had done 47k. Luckily it was replaced under warranty.
