Hello forum,,,,not sure how to explain this, haven't had any issues with my a6 c5 2.5 tdi auto for ages so not been to visit,,,anyway,,,I've obviously got problems,,,,whilst driving at slow speeds on a few occasions the wife describes the car "autu" to be all of a sudden revving high the feels like it changes gear then goes back to normal! I've taken it out tonight to see what happened but this didn't happen for me but the car did seem to be running intermittently at higher than normal revs then after about 5 miles of the test run the engine management light came on and remains on..can anyone think what could be happening,,,she describes its almost like the car is changing hear on its own,,,,,any advice much appreciated.

Took the car out again to witness the problem for myself and there's definitely a problem, it's appears to be reving very high when trying to change from 3rd to 4th or 4th to 5th,,,it doesn't always happen though but when it does the engine revs high then eventually jumps into gear...is this a job for any garage or a transition specialist?

17119/P0735/001845 - Gear 5: Incorrect Ratio
Possible Symptoms
  • Clutch Slipping
  • Reduced Power Output
Possible Causes
  • Gear related Clutch slipping/faulty
  • Gear related Solenoid Valve dirty/faulty
  • Overloaded Clutch due to continuous high Torque or Tuning
  • Wiring and/or Connections faulty
  • Sensor Gear Position Indicator faulty
  • Mechanical Failure
Possible Solutions
  • Check Engine Values for Plausibility, especially Torque related ones.
  • Check Wiring and Connections
  • Check Sensor Gear Position Indicator
  • Check Gear Solenoides
Special Notes
  • The gear monitoring of the transmission control module checks the gear ratio by comparing transmission input and output speed in regard of the currently selected gear. This fault code is being set when recognizing an implausible transmission ratio.

Cheers Alan..not really sure what to do with that info.. The gearbox feels like it's intermittently slipping though..

I'm having dramas with my turbo at the moment. Because of this the car performs really poor at low revs which forces the gearbox to jump to high revs in a lower gear to get anywhere. If it changes into 5th at to low a Rev I can have my foot flat to the boards and in wont accelerate past 50 mph. If I keep it above 2300 rpm it behaves fine.
A lot of the time it feels like the torque converter isn't locking in 3rd and 4th.
Perhaps check that the VNT actuator is working properly or that the VNT hasn't siezed in the turbo, that's the problem I'm having and can't get it booked in for a warranty inspection until next week.
Best of luck, Jimmy.

Is this just a massive coincidence? I've disconnected my faulty coolant sensor whilst I get the new one and the auto gear box has been perfect! Is there any way the four wires in the sensor could have effected the gearbox?
