A8 alloys - Tyre size for A3T?

Greetings all,

Just a quick one, been looking at buying a set of A8 alloys for my '97 1.8T A3. The ones I've seen have 245x40x18's on them - will they fit my car, or are they to wide?
I'm running at standard height etc! Don't really want to by new tyres so i take it spacers will be the way ahead if they're to wide?
