Does anyone know when the switch from 6-plate to 7-plate took place? I'm test-driving a July 2005 A6 later today, and would like to know whether it will have the stronger upgraded box.

Not sure when, but it was before your car was built. I'm sure the previous models (C5) had the uprated seven-plater towards the end of the series.

kind of off topic but is it only the multitronic thats used in the a6's or is there another auto too?

Looking at that, it would appear that my 2004 (54) C5 A6 Avant multitronic has the newer, better 7 clutch version?
