Hi, I’m new to the forum and after some help and advice from you all? With the font of knowledge on this forum, I thought you my be able to help with my many questions. Apologies if this post is in the wrong section. I’m looking to buy a used Audi in the next few months and always wanted an A6 C7 3.0 BiTDI but with the world going crazy, they’ve gone up about 3k. So looking at other options, I also like A4 B9. 3.0 TDi 272 bhp and the S4. I’m looking at the avant as I need the space with a growing family, kids, dog and a wife that wants to bring the whole house when we go away. Also work is a 120 mile round trip. I would like something quick and Quattro. Ideally my budget is 25k but might stretch a little further for the right car, but can’t make up my mind. The A6 is a beast and a friend has one and I love it, but is it worth the extra 3k? I like the sport seats and how quick the S4 is, but is it worth the extra money over the 272bhp A4? Is the S4 noticeably quicker? What’s people experience with the three models? Any advantages/ disadvantages? What would choose and why?

120 mile commute would really point in the direction of diesel.

The whole used car market has inflated, you'll be paying more for whichever model you go for, just the way that it is.

25k doesn't sound unreasonable to source a BiTdi A6, however it really depends on your wishlist of age, mileage, condition, specification etc.

Personally I would go for the A6 for the comfort, space and reasonable performance, and think it certainly should be worth more than the A4 by the very nature of the lineup.

If you're stuck in the middle, A7 seem to be slightly cheaper than the A6 for a similar package.

Thanks lit.91, the A7 wouldn’t work as I’m always carrying something in the boot, usually some kind of building materials, so the tailgate would be useful.

I would go for the 272 PS A6 Avant. In the real world here in the UK it will not be much slower than the BiTDi and you get the extra space.
It would be noticeably slower than the BITDi when accelerating from 80 - 120 mph. You just need to decide how often you are going to do that. Going for the 272 should get you more spec for the same money.

Good point, I’ll do some more searching

Hi Andy. I have just recently been in the same boat. Having a c7 2013 Bitdi I wanted to upgrade so went for a c7.5 S6 which went back to dealer due to faulty gearbox. I realised the fuel economy in the S6 was ridiculous so I started looking around. I looked at another newer Bitdi A6 Avant but the price of them is silly at the mo.
Looked at S4 Avant too which was nice and fast too, only a little quicker than my Bitdi and the interior was not as nice as the A6. Also mpg in the S4 would be no better than about 30.
So I went with a 2019 c8 3.0tdi 286bhp Avant which I absolutely love. Mpg is 40 average and the comfort and interior is amazing. I paid 30k for mine but would be worth the stretch.
But honestly I would highly recommend the Bitdi A6 as they are amazing. Fast, spacious and sound lovely too with the active sound.
Good luck mate. Let us know what u end up buying

Thanks for sharing your experience. Yeah I’ll definitely keep you posted. I had dismissed the 286bhp A6 a little as I thought I may have been disappointed that it’s not the BiTDI. I’ll definitely consider one now

Honestly the difference between the c7 and c8 is leaps and bounds. The interior upgrade is next level and as far as power goes I can barely tell the difference.
Also 8 speed ZF box which is way better than s tronic imo

I've just been in a similar position except for an s4, I wanted 3.0 tdi, and quattro preferably avant but open to all variants of a4, a5 a6 & a7.

I ended up with a 272 a6 allroad, speed is subjective and to me its plenty quick enough. I've only had the car a couple of months and although I love it, I do wonder on a regular basis if it's too big, especially in car parks where I'm looking for the wider spots. Also first impressions on "chuck ability" on bends it feels big, this could be the fact its an allroad, it's bigger or both, for me the jury is still out on whether I should have got an a4, there were just so many more a6s with the 3.0 quattro with the right spec that I just fell into it.

Thanks for replying. It maybe worth me test driving the A6 and the A4. I think when I do test drive it, trying to park it at the dealership will be part of the test

I'm sure I'll get used to the size, there are plenty of vans longer and wider that manage to park ok but as someone who's worried about parking dents, the wider size of it does come into it when I'm parking in supermarkets..

I have to park daily on the road or public car park as well as I dont have a drive and I definitely won't park in some spots I would have with my old car.

On the motorway though the a6 is just perfect.

Hi Paul,

I am so pleased that the C8 is working for you. The difference between 620 Nm of torque of the 286PS C8 and the 650 Nm of the C7 BiTDi is minimal.

I will never be able to justify a C8 with the paltry annual mileage that I do.

Hi all,

I’m going to test drive an A6 3.0 TDI tomorrow, the reg is HG65YKX. Does anyone know anything about it or belong to anyone on here once? I’ve read to check there isn’t a coolant leak at the bottom of the V. Is this a common fault? Is there anything else I need to look out for?

Cheers
Andy

Andy - go for the BiTDi - it covers every base and does everything brilliantly whether cruising/carrying huge amounts of 'stuff' or blasting along quicker than 98% of anything you are likely to meet. I have had many 'fast' cars (400bhp Golf R, Escort Montecarlo, Scooby to name a few fun ones) but I have come back to a BiTDi and will never regret it - my only problem is what on earth could I ever replace it with?! Nothing else does everything so well...

Hi Stuart

thanks for the reply. In the end the budget wouldn’t stretch to the BiTDI but have gone with a A6 C7 272bhp. Arrives tomorrow lunchtime. It’s like Christmas, I’m so excited

Hi Andy,

I agree with Stuart that the BiTDi is the ultimate. My previous big diesel, a 270 HP 4.0 V8 A8, started to run out of breath under maximum acceleration at about 80 mph , as the single turbo reached its limits.
With the BiTDi, the larger turbo cuts in at higher revs and keeps the boost coming - and I haven't dared find out where the acceleration tails off.

However, I think you will find the 272 PS more than enough here in the UK. I find that the ease with which the car picks up speed coming off a roundabout with over 600 Nm of torque never ceases to amuse me.

I only bought my BiTDi because of the unusual Audi Exclusive interior trim and would have been happy with a 272 with that trim. The burden of my choice is that inner London is now inaccessible without paying the emissions charge.

I agree that used prices have reached silly levels. Dealers are offering folk the same money as they paid for their cars 3 years previously.

I think the big diesel is right for your 120 mile commute as it will 50% better fuel consumption.
