Hi all has anyone got any realistic fuel economy data for my car. And any ideas why mine is rubbish

I have the same car except an S-Line with Multitronic box. Before filling up last week it said I had 35 miles left on what was in the tank. I put 30 litres in and it said I had 335 miles left. I reset my trip counter, and by the time it got back to the 35 mile mark (meaning I should have covered 300 miles), my trip counter reading was 212 miles. I will add at this point that this is going to and from work and driving around town and the city.

My question on this matter is how the on board computer calculates the predicted mileage - is it just a basic estimation calculated from litres of fuel and supposed mpg, or does it continually monitor your driving and calculate it based on historical mpg? If it's the latter then I'm concerned.

Path,

It constantly monitors your driving so if you had been driving uneconomically when you fill up then it will assume you are going to carry on driving it hard and therefore tell you the range. If you are driving it gently when you fill up however I'd be expecting your range to be somewhere in the region of 500-550 miles.

Neal,

My girlfirends old A3 2.0 tdi used to regularly return 52-53mpg so I'd expect real world figures in an A4 to be at least 45 mpg to 50 mpg, but cant confirm for def because I've never driven an A4 tdi. Even my car (petrol 2.0 TFSI) with 250 or so bhp is good on fuel if you don't floor it everywhere, I've just come back from scotland (400 mile round trip on one tank - around 35mpg) and I wasn't driving too slowly either.

I don't think you'll be upset with the economy though put it that way

Mike

Neal,

sorry just re-read the bottom bit of your original post. Is yours bad on fuel then? You should be getting a minimum of about 40mpg even with heavy town driving, if it worse than that, maybe the MAF sensor is faulty or on its way out. Get it plugged into a diagnostics machine if you can to check.

You could also try an engine remap or a decent tuning box, they generally give better economy (around 10%) when driving normally because the engine is optimised properly plus they make the car miles better to drive (from experience - I've had about 5 or 6 remapped diesels and each one has always given better fuel economy although they do use more if you boot it everywhere which you will probably do at first!)

I've got a 2005 A4 140bhp TDI S-Line. To and from work I get around 44-45mpg in winter and this is sometimes driving hard. A motorway journey will easly return over 50mpg.

At the moment the temperatures knock the mpg a bit but I'm still getting over 500 miles a tank (usually around 600).

I would agree with Nathan - I live in the sticks and get 50+

Town driving is a killer for fuel, my old A3 used to drink petrol in London, but once i'd moved to the sticks it gave 33mpg!

Don't take too much notice of your fuel economy at the moment due to the weather. I have a 2005 2.0 tdi 140bhp A4 Avant B7 S-line. In good weather I get 41-44 mpg around town and 50+ on motorway, however I did a 300 mile motorway journey over xmas and only avaraged 44 mpg, and a 60 mile round trip on A Roads in the snow and only got 33mpg.

I have an '09 plate 2.0TDi cab which has more or less consistently, from new, returned 35mpg driving around the city. The best I've noticed getting out of it was on a run from Glasgow - Aviemore where I managed an average of just over 50mpg, however between 45 - 50 seems to be par for the course on motorways

I have a 2005 2.0 tdi 140bhpA4 Avant B7 S-line, which is giving me rubbish fuel consumption at the moment under 24mpg, car had head rebuilt and ave done 500 miles since then....can anyone throw some light on this ?

I've got some VCDS info, but cannot see anything irregular, car drives fine, maybe takes an extra revolution to start when warm

Thats absolutely awful !
I get circa 50 mpg (and a little less in the cold weather) and can but hope something useful is posted about your request for assistance, good luck with getting this resolved.

Its true, the cold weather will give less feul economey for Diesels as it takes longer to warm up. When this first happened to me I was shocked to see how less i got out of a full tank.. but you learn to live with it.

how are you coming up with your mpg figures coz on a run from plymouth to birmingham nec my dash computer told me i did 52mpg average, but i filled the tank to the brim when i left home and filled up again when i got home, doing the maths for distance/fuel used the figures came out as only 42mpg, don't trust your computer

Birmingham to London there and back, not even 250 miles, over £50 fuel used, around town, £40 fuel lasts 130 miles if that.

Please someone out there must have a solution. I've retrofitted literally everything desirable in this car, drives like a dream.

Heres a VCDS PRINT SCREEN...hope someone can see something here.

Just as a comparison I get 35mpg on long motorway runs in my 3.0tdi, which is an auto and a cab, so probably the most uneconomical diesel in the range. The DIS always say avg = 45, but calculated it's 35... shocking how they can get this so wrong IMO.

I know it's a long shot but have you got a fuel leak somewhere along the lines? Any fuel sat around the injectors? Last fuel filter change? Maf running ok?

i can do a run from bovington Dorset to Wirral Liverpool on quarter of a tank it's just over 260miles n I'm running 147hp revo stage 1

WOW !! Mine is really bad...no leaks, like I say head done, all engine decoked, new cambelt and full service....

And heres my VCDS Readings at 2 different times, both at normal temperature, the injector readings are not solid they are erratic and deviating all the time, where as I checked my friend A6 2.0Tdi and his were solid stable.

Your miles you get when filling up seems to low for a 140 TDI?? is it a Quattro??

£50 - On motorway in 140 TDI should see at least 280- 300 miles depending on driving styles (I can see your frustrations)
£40 - Around town in your 140 TDI should see 175 -200 miles

In My 3.0 TDI Quattro £25 gets me between 95 -110 around town
£40 -would get me 160 -185 Miles

so you can see something is just not wright there!!

What feul are you using ??

Yeh mine too - Auto box MPG highest mine has returned is 38.5 on a run 26 around town driving cruising like a sunday cruiser!!

It's quite strange, if your injectors are erratic wouldn't that suggest the ecu sending wrong timing info? Does your car smell like its running rich? Hard to tell with tdi's but you will notice a smell difference.

There was a diesel smell and leak, but that was the tandem pump gasket, that was changed smell and leak went away, that was a month ago.

What I need is to find out what are the ideal setting for timing, torsion value, injection quality etc and work from them. Is there anywhere I can get them from ?

Hmm... I also have a 2.0tdi s-line cab (multitronic) and seem to be lucky to get average mpg up to 33 at the moment. I do a 10 or so mile journey along the motorway to work and it doesnt get much over this level very often. Ive only had it a month but am thinking it sounds pretty low?

Well, Im going to have my timing belt installed again, reason being as you will know, I had the head rebuilt and installed due to tensioner bolt failure.

Over the weekend, I set the injector clearance and that alone change the Torsion value quite a bit and the injection quantity deviation has come down across the 4 injectors. ! don't know if that make sense.

So instead of messing around with the inlet and outlet cam, I'm going to get the cambelt and valve timing redone later in the week, hoping that should resolve it.

I got the timing belt redone, this was the procedure the technician used;
locked the cams and crank with the relevant tools, loosened the 3 x 13mm bolts on each cam to allow the cam pulleys to move to remove the slack from the belt.

Before refitting the new belt, turned both cam sprockets as far clockwise as possible to when feeding the new cam belt on it, allowing to get the tension out of the none tensioner side,
Once belt is tensioned torqued up the 3x 13mm bolts on each pully and then removed locking pins.

Turned the engine over by hand 3 times and the cam pulleys and mark i left on the crank all lined up correctly. Reinserted tools to check if everything lines up (yes).

This is the procedure according the Audi....if you think otherwise please let me know.

These are the initial VCDS reading immediately after starting, temperature here -3 Degrees !!

Torsion Value -1
Injection Start 5 BTDC

OK, I have been driving for a week now...the consumption is 22.1mpg or there abouts!!
Can anyone guide me as to what I need to check....here a screen print of the VCDS settings.

I've had my A4 TDI 140 for about 3 months now and I'm averaging between 650-690 from full to fuel light coming on, 690 miles this past week from full to fuel light, and will be touching 750 by the time I get to a fuel station tonight. That's almost pure motorway and A road miles, mainly at the speed limits, with one run home from work cruising at about 95 for 45 miles. Looking to get it remapped shortly and I'm hoping to improve the fuel consumption drastically with my driving style
