A4 2.0 tdi 170 S-Line EGR woes

Hi all. I recently fitted a brand new VDO EGR to the above car. I’ve now sold the car to a mate (I know, I know) and he’s phoned me tonight with the engine check light. ‘His mate’ has scanned it and said it’s the EGR, would this new unit need coding to the car or anything like that??
