A4 1.9 tdi Lift Pump location

Hi All, I'm a newbie here if this has already been posted, then I apologise, but i have been searching for answers for a couple of weeks now, and would be most grateful for some help:
I have a 2002 A4 1.9tdi, Chassis number WAUZZ8E92A******, and Engine number AWX****** , that has provided me with some 250 000Km of trouble free motoring, and ... thought I'd flush the tank seeing as the old girl is now 20 years old ... so I though I'd take out the lift pump and clean up the pump mesh, and drain the tank contents, sooooo ... out came the rear seat, and ... after removing BOTH the blanking plates ... no pump? ... where is it? / How do I access it? ... I can hear it priming as I turn on the ignition.
