On the back of a raft of resoundingly good reviews from the motoring press it appears the Audi A3 is selling in stronger numbers than ever before.

In February 2014 the A3 posted one of it's highest sales figures to date, selling 1148 units in the UK, placing it 9th in the table of best selling cars for the month. The number 1 selling Fiesta still managed to shift 4 times more units (4415), but if the A3 was to sell in those kind of numbers they'd be less exclusive and residuals could ultimately be dented. Total car sales were up around 6% year on year, and for the month this equated to sales of nearly 69,000 units.

The BMW 3 series followed close behind the A3 in 10th position having shifted 1085 units.

UK's best-selling cars in February 2014

1. Ford Fiesta 4415 units (Equates to 6.4% of total car sales)
2. Vauxhall Corsa 3138 units
3. Vauxhall Astra 2707 units
4. Ford Focus 2566 units
5. VW Golf 1628 units
6. VW Polo 1450 units
7. Mercedes-Benz C-class 1231 units
8. Vauxhall Insignia 1164 units
9. Audi A3 1148 units (Equates to 1.7% of total car sales)
10. BMW 3-series 1085 units

February is usually deemed to be a quieter month followed by an uplift of sales in March for the new registration plates. It will be interesting to see if the A3 figures in the table again in March as it rarely features in the top 10.

I guess my only surprise is that the Mercedes is the biggest seller of the 3 premium compacts given it's not been received with the same kind of praise. Whether this reflects heavy discounting ahead of the launch of the new 'C' class????

We've already got the best selling car and I've gone from the fourth best selling to the ninth. But I am happy....
