A3 3.2 v6 misfire fixed - ECU software update

I know there are several threads on this (e.g. http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a3-s3-sportback-8p-chassis/161451-a3-3-2-2004-missfire-2.html), but for people's future reference...

Just had TPI 2010289/3 (SVM 8P01A005) applied by Swindon Audi. After a little confusion, once I gave them the SVM code, it all went swimmingly.

Took about 90 minutes of me waiting around (no hardship), car was given a once over and also cleaned inside and out… all for half an hour labour at the reduced rate, so only cost £39.

Car now drives spot on, no jerkiness or misfires, and also accelerates throughout the gears on part throttle (including from standstill) much, much more smoothly.

Therefore I can recommend Inchcape Swindon Audi, as of Jan 14!
 
Was this the issue with coil pack or another issue? When i phone Audi before and gave them my reg and vin number they said there was no call backs with my model (07 plate 3.2 V6)

WoOuld this update of been mentioned on their system?
 
I went into Bradford Audi yesterday to get mine booked and just got a load of crap spouted by the mechanic about having to test drive it, scan it and do this do that then THEY will decide if i need the update!!!

Goinf to huddersfield today to see wht they say.

it it must be my face because I paid £90 at Aberdeen Audi for the update but theywere no hassle the tech wondered how I knew my car had no codes Vcds that's how ,some Ecu's will not accept the update luckily mine did.
 
autolatry, how did you get on at Huddersfield?

I just spoke to Bradford Audi and awaiting a phonecall back from a master technician.. Not holding my breath!

Just been down, no problem. Got it booked in.
It was the master tech at bradford who i spoke to yesterday. I wouldnt bother with them to be honest.

Il PM you the details of the service adviser who has just booked me in. Give him a call.

If you can't hold 2000rpm steady in neutral, and can feel surging in-gear between about 1500rpm and 2200rpm, I'd say you need an update.

A scan with VCDS showed my software was on version 7000 (it is now on version 8036).

I specifically told them it had a misfire "at high revs" and also around the 2000rpm mark, and they needed to to apply SVM 8P01A005 on my car.

That was it!

Nothing to do with the coilpack recall btw.
 
Ohh so if i can get some one to scan with VCDS and its on 7000 it will need it? its an 07 plate will that make a difference?
 
Could do. I'd suggest that if you can't feel anything wrong with your car you leave it though.
 
Just had this update done at Swindon Audi as well.

The girl I spoke to on the phone to start with was hopeless and she had no idea what I was asking for and she just kept telling me that my car had already been back for the coil pack recall.

I gave her the SVN number and she went away for a while and came back to say we don't know what this number is and it's not coming up in our system. She said she would go and ask some one else, at this point I asked her to phone me back when she had an answer as I was on an 0845 number costing a fortune from my mobile.

She never phoned back..... In the end I phoned again, quoted the SVM number to the same girl who had forgotten who I was, she said; I will ask the head of technical department. I said please can I just talk to him. As soon as I gave him the SVM number he knew what I was on about and I had it booked in with in 3 minutes of talking to him.

He found it strange how 2 people in a month had called quoting SVM numbers and wanting this update that they had never heard of.

When I went over to Swindon, they were very helpful. A was assigned someone to look after me who showed me where the comfy seats were and made me a coffe.

About an hour and 15 and a look round the showroom my car was ready, it had been cleaned inside and out and they had completed a health check as well as the ECU update, all for £39.... Bargin

The update has worked all signs of hesitation have gone and everything is much smoother now.

Therefore I can also recommend Inchcape Swindon Audi

I'm looking forward to February when mines getting done. I have agreed to pay an hours labour though £98 I think
 
Hi everyone, this is my first post here. Firstly i would like to say a big thank you to paddy whos post from 2011 which i stumbled upon whilst researching a misfire problem alerted me to the 3.2 ECU update.

I was experiencing all the associated problems with the troublesome original ECU software and was excited to find there was an easy fix (so i thought) to resolve the issues.

I firstly Emailed my local dealers requesting an appointment to have the update applied, giving them the TPL number,the SVM code and CD number. The response was bring your car in tomorrow morning, there is an outstanding workshop action on your vehicle for replacement coil packs and if there is an update available it will be applied for £60. This was not satisfactory to me as i wanted conformation that the update could indeed be found before i made a half hour journey through morning traffic to the dealers. Next i was told that the service mangers Techs had instructed him there was no update available for my car, which i knew to be untrue and told him so. I then provided him with my Engine code,ECU number and the software version it was running and accompanied it with pasted and copied (minus names and forum details) posts from paddy and 3.2Ju showing that my vehicle was indeed in the list of cars that the update was intended to be applied to, and could he print these off for his Techs to read. Cutting a very long story short, six weeks and 20-30 Emails later i decided enough was enough and Emailed Audi uk with a formal complaint about the dealership and cc'd the service manger in the Email.

That was three days ago and i have just collected my car with the update applied and new coilpacks. The difference is amazing,better throttle response,smooth acceleration,all issues resolved and it maybe my imagination but it even sounds better when being pushed.
It was hard work but its in the past now so i'm a happy 3.2 owner again.

For future reference i have been told that the TPL proceedure number and the CD update have been withdrawn by Audi so the only way the update can be found is via the SVM code. My old ECU software was 5629 it is now 8087. Lowestoft Audi are now familiar with the update and can apply it for £60.

Hi everyone,
i have just bought an 04 plate 3.2 and love it but i know the ecu needs updated as it wont hold the revs and is very lumpy so i phoned hiughl;and audi in inverness who claimed they knew nothing about the update and said they would need to take the car out for a test drive and scan it etc etc. the master mechanic was supposed to phone me back 2 days ag and im still waiting but all the girl who answered the phone could say was my car needed the coilpack recall.

has anybody else had dealings with Inverness Audi?
 
I dont know whether mine needs it 07 plate sportback but if its available for £39 i wouldnt mind just getting it done for peace of mind and the health check they do on it.
 
cjmcgrath-Its a nightmare,i know. Quote the SVM number and explain its a ten year old update that was released for the early 3.2s, they will actively need to search for it. Read this thread so you are aware of why it was released. Look for paddys posts

JingleJangle- the later 3.2s like yours had the update factory installed.
 
Cheers bb54, I'm booked in for next Tuesday (earliest they could get me in :s 2 week wait..) I won't be leaving until it is done and I will take my laptop and be checking they have done it and they aren't just fobbing me off as the master mechanic/ workshop manager had never ever heard of the issue and didn't know what to do with the update details I gave them.
 
Hi all im new on here ive recently just brought a 54plate a3 3.2 v6 car drives and sounds great after reading the link about the ecu update etc im sure my car needs this as it has a slight hesitation and sits at 600rpm at tickover with a slight lump have had a vagcom plugged in and no faults appear Im from hertfordshire area just wondering if any ones had an update carried out from Audi?

Just for info guys, I'm pretty sure the update is for cars up to 2006.
Any after that have the upgraded ECU, so you don't require it on the later models.
 
I had my ecu read by a snap on solus pro does this info mean anything to anyone?

Hello. That does not really mean much mate, its just your ECU ID with the engine code being the two letters at the end, mine ends in BDB. ME7.11 is the model of ECU and the 6486 is the software the ECU is running. On my VCDS readout the WSC number refers to the shop ??? Maybe where it was sold ?
My ECU was running the old software- 5629 and it needed to be updated to 8087.
I cant recall GH being an engine code that fell into the update bracket for the 3.2

Just read through the last post again if my ecu is running software 6486 and yours is running 8087 surely this is the software i need for my ecu?

Which engines/controllers can be updated?

Engines:

starting from 9/2004 BMJ
starting from 11/2005 BOY (only the first variants)

My mistake earlier when I said about the ECU ID having the engine code at the end... I read through my VAG COM read out in a rush.

Spoke with Watford audi, Hitchin audi and Hatfield audi

All of these dealers recognise this update but are quoting me £150 plus vat to get it done which seems a bit steep

I've spoke with a local vw and audi specialist garage in Hitchin which are carrying out an update on my ecu tomorrow for £70
 
Had my ecu updated today by audi specialist they put the latest software on. Car drives spot on no flatspots or hesitation/juddering

Digging this thread again.
I had the same symptoms as most of you here : hesitant at 2k rpm, rough idle etc .... back in 2013 when I first purchased the car, after some long search on the forum I had the ECU update at my local dealer (not without some long discussions/arguments) and the car came out fine.
However recently the car battery went flat after some time without use, so I had to jump start it and recharge the battery. And the same problems are back , same symptoms & smae code errors too .
I had the car scanned last week end and the ECU software version is still the 'latest' 8036.
Which raise the question : What do I do next ?

Please if anyone has an idea ... let me know .
I have read on a another thread that the same issue was resolved by changing the "cyclone oil separetor" (inside the rocker cover , part 022 103 515 A)
As anyone got any view on this or heard/knows anyone who had it done ??
 
hi my car has same problem.been reading these posts the car used to be ok but now have noticed 1500-2500 hesitation.just to let you know got the pcv oil cyclone separator changed and still have the same problem although it has stopped the hissing vacuum from the oil filler. after reading mall- uk post i also had flat battery and needed to jump start,the car has 1 owner with full dealer history coil packs done 2011 software done 2008 so assume all upto date.would it be possible its lost update due to flat battery.much appreciated help needed.2004 a3

Thank you for the input , I was looking at getting the pcv valve change but wasn't sure that was the source of the problem but I don't have the hissing noise and I can remove the oil cap when car s warm (as it seems to be one way to check if pcv is damaged) although when I remove the the oil cap or lift the oil deep stick the misfire get worse.
I had the écu update done prior to jump start the car and the software update still showing so I don t think it lost the update from the jump start (even if that when the idle hesitation came back then ) .
I have been running the car myself again at weeek end, doing longer drive (min 30/45 min) making sure that the fuel tank is topped up only with shell nitro and there is major improvement. Only had that engine shake once after 5 min , gave it a bit of revv which stopped it and nothing after that ( 2 long stretchs of country road of 40ish miles )
Very confused .
I going to carry on this way and see if things get worse or improve but will let you know .
Any comments/ ideas is welcome..
