A3 1.8T 150bhp AGU engine Mods/Upgrades

I'll hopefully let you know later this year how viable it is ;-)
Ok... I'll qualify that.... for somebody with a decent amount of knowledge thats doing it themselves then its viable... for the average joe its a lot more work and conversions like this are generally not for the feint hearted as it involves electrics and not many people do electrics..

Much like engine swaps... they are a little more involved than they used to be... long gone are the days when with a little transmission tunnel remodelling with a hammer you can fit a 2ltr pinto into a 1.1ltr Mk2 Escort...

Seeing as the OP has already said he is no mechanic and would be getting someone else to do the work then a wideband conversion in context is not viable...

tbh I did offer to convert Prawns to ME7 ages ago but the Emerald solution is simply more suited

<tuffty/>

was a newer fiesta st montune or something, we went from a 50mph rolling start and got whooped worse than anything I've raced before ☹

yeah I thought the ecu swap would've been a simple job but like I said I'm no mechanic and obviously underestimated it, will give a few places a ring and see if they can tune my AGU

so let's say I wanted to go for a ko4, what is the hardest part of the conversion and approx price of everything ill need?

but he has a sports car, and you have a family hatchback?

there is a reason Fiesta STs are 7K and 1999 A3 is about 800 quid.

Read Prawns thread I think he has a TFSI Frame K04 hybrid turbo fitted 350BHP - or you can fit the S3 Kit as already mentioned I saw everything you need for about £1K on eBay recently or look for an S3 some go for 2K (probably a shed) but they are money pits and you will likely have to spend another 2K in the first year fixing bits.

Or just enjoy your car for what it is - once people start changing lots on these old cars they fail.

There are places mentioned on this forum stating who still maps AGU ECUs maybe they will do a dyno and tell you it is already 205BHP?

to be fair the guy I bought it from could hardly speak English and never really knew what he was saying... The car may well have a ko3s already, if he added the fmic, cold air feed and upgraded exhaust then maybe just maybe it will already have the ko3s or better installed... Best bet is to do what u just mentioned and get it tested on a dyno

let's imagine the car hasn't been remapped at all, could adding the mods that it has already possibly lower its original bhp since the ecu hasn't been mapped to adjust to the mods?

my previous car was a Peugeot Gti 180 with a straight through decat, the Peugeot felt faster than the Audi but I'm sure its a lighter car and was naturally aspirated non turbo

by the looks of things the previous owner had prepared the car for a stage 2 remap so I'm hoping it already has a ko3s

Maybe maybe not, Maybe he did but couldn't find anyone to map it. You will never know until you get it on a dyno. Get it dyno'd so you know where your at ,it don't cost much and at least you will know where you at

ok planning to go to ecotune tomorrow and get them to test it on the dyno, will let u guys know how it goes

this is exciting stuff - upload a video of it being put through its paces - and a copy of the dyno sheet.

ok i will take a short video of it going through the dyno and the results

here is ecotunes stage 1 remap for my a3, torque increase is impressive

You want to be careful with that much torque as at over 300 you really want forged rods or run the risk of blowing up your engine

320NM is only 235ftlb so that's not a problem.
I would look at replacing fuel pump and maf sensor if they are still original.
Also a smoke test to check for any leaks would be sensible. With the age, any original boost or vacume hoses are going to be past their best.

My bad read that wrong, I thought that was a lot for a stage 1

I've always wanted to say that since the heady days of the uploaded.com forums in 2004

ok so just had to book the car in for next Thursday for the rolling road test, cost £60 but at least I will know what the car is in terms of bhp/torque, my mechanic is saying I shouldn't go for a stage 2 on my car quite yet so if I find out its not remapped then I will just get a stage 1 then replace hoses/lines/gaskets/rings and then see about the stage 2.

anyone know how to tell if I have a ko3s already installed without tearing the turbo out? Seems to be 2 models with 150bhp standard but one has the ko3 and other has the ko3s...

I don't think there is a physical difference from the outside (apart from perhaps a part number embossed) I thought the difference was the compressor wheel.

so someone said that some 150's have a 180 turbo installed but down-tuned to keep them at 150? sounds plausible for a cross over / road tax economy model ?

it was through revo remap website, when i selected audi a3 8l there is 2-3 models with 150 bhp standard but one of them says next to it ko3s, the other two say ko3

K03s was fitted to AUM and some quattro A3's... AGU is a K03..

<tuffty/>

so in that list in revo is mine just a VVT or the NVVT?

misread the revo list, what I mean is mine a cable throttle or the one above

that is bad... Revo only offer a stage 1 remap on this engine ☹

AGU's on OE management are becoming dinosaurs in the tuning world these days... difficult to custom tune which is what all 1.8t's need these days due to most being worn out and/or the diversity of mods makes it a challenge for generic code to cope with...

They take too long to dial in on more exotic setups so not profitable for tuners and decent 1.8t tuners are far and few between these days..

There are a couple of places that will still entertain ME3.8 but means you may have to travel

<tuffty/>

so I've came to the conclusion that I may be better selling this and getting an AUM..

...apart from the rods on those if you plan to take it further than a K03s... although thats true of any 1.8t to be fair...

understand what ur saying but don't need 2k+ to get 0-60 in 6 secs, my 2004 Peugeot 206 gti 180 with a decat SS was 800 quid and easily done 0-60 in under 7 sec, only reason I sold it was because basically the whole body's laquer was starting to peel but mechanically it was sound

my budget is basically whatever I get for the Audi which I'm guessing will be between 1300-1500
