Hello,
I have an Audi A1 Sport 1.4 TFSI Auto 2011 56K miles.
It’s experiencing a major issue with the gearbox at the moment and I’m unsure of the next steps. I understand that these DSG gearboxes / mechatronics are a nightmare and very expensive to fix. The current symptoms are I am unable to start the car in Park – it actually is in gear so when the vehicle tries to start it stalls. I have put the vehicle on axle stands (so the driving wheels are free) and it still stalls when in park. However, when putting the vehicle in Neutral, I can press the brake, turn the ignition, release the brake and the engine starts. The wheels are turning as it’s still in gear. When I put the vehicle into D and press the accelerator, it starts in D2 and skips D3 & D5 (seems to be the odd gears). Then I get the gear flashing icon in the dash. Then I can actually select Neutral. Once in Neutral I can select reverse and that gear works as expected and being in drive enables me to drive the car forward in D2.

I believe I could try

  1. Drain oil and replace with 1.7 litres of G002/004 (not confident this will fix the issue)
  2. Remove Mechatronics (either send away to be refurbished (£450) or home refurbish via kit off eBay (£120 & time)– unsure how difficult this would be though, may be out of my depth.
  3. Refit Mechatronics and try again.
  4. If still fails, then I believe it will be a complete new gearbox / rebuild?

Before I go ahead with the above steps, is there anything else that I could try before going head first with some pretty major work!? Any help would be much appreciated;

I have had the following codes on the auto trans;
Unable to Engage Gear 1 -or- Synchronization Gear 1 aborted
Unable to Engage Gear 3 -or- Synchronization Gear 3 aborted
P189C/006300 - Function Restriction Due To Insufficient Pressure Build-up. (it seemed that topping up the oil fixed this)

I had run some diagnostics on it and get the following codes;

Engine
3 Faults Found:
5456 - Starter Will Not Turn
P3054 00 [096] - Jammed or Electrical Malfunction
7158 - Please Check DTC Memory in CAN Gateway (J533)
7021 - MIL Request Signal Active (Check TCM for errors too!)

Gearbox
1 Fault Found:
001867 - Unable to Engage Gear 3 -or- Synchronization Gear 3 aborted

AUTO HVAC
5 Faults Found:
0040 - Function Restriction due to Faults in Other Modules
0051 - High Pressure Sensor
0056 - Regulation Valve for A/C Compressor
0060 - Engine Off Timer Performance
0069 - Function Restricted due to Insufficient Voltage

I don't think as you mentioned a change of oil will be the cure, maybe a specialist in DSG Gearboxes in you area or one a search on the internet may shed some more light on the way forward before you start spending serious money Craig

I was told this gearbox was a sealed unit so you should never change the oil

It sounds like getting it to a Audi specialist would be best

Have you tried to google those fault codes for other resolutions ?
