Hi all,

I though I had better start a new thread for this one and wanted to test your knowledge as there is some crazy knowledge floating about on these forums!

Have got the usual minor S3 :s3addict: problems drivers window not going up properly, rear washer pipe leaking in boot etc but even though my car has just passed it MOT (unfortunately failing on a side light and a snapped front spring with 1/2inch missing off the end!) the car now has problems that are more a major concern but NOT an MOT failure.

1) After 30 seconds of starting the car from cold say in the morning it makes a screeching noise for about 2 seconds my thought are that it may be somethin adjusting as it warms up or a belt starting up?

2) Pretty much since I bought the car back in April when you get to a speed of about 50mph and cruise steady it starts to make a faint rumbling noise, my first though was bearings but maybe tyre rumble??

3) BRAKE PROBLEM - Once I get to motorway speed of 60+mph and I need to brake I really dont want to press the pedal as it judders and braking does not feel confident at all :crying:. I think this has got worse since owning the car but I do not push the car hardly ever and am always gentle on brakes. I was told by two garages (Audi and specialist) that my brake discs are corroded pretty bad but they passed MOT. I realise that the test on MOT is to get to like 30mph and brake and this is easily passable in a S3 with even shocking brakes. I know that I may have answered this already but I thought it may be a bearing/hub problem? Hmm.

Your thoughts on these matters would be much appreciated, sorry for the insanely long post. I clumped these points together as I thought numbers 2 and 3 may be related.

Cheers

cheers dave.

Okay I will have a look into this. Any ideas on the screeching?

You know the cheapest way to get a set of pads and discs? Gonna have to do the job myself but need to know if I have got all the tools.

I got mine from AVS (vwspares) here

Also worth a look to get a caliper rewind tool for the rears (I just used a g clamp for the fronts), Got mine in halfords worked a treat.

Cheers Ross.

My brake fluid needs replacing too did you renew yours too?

The list of things that need doing on my car now just seems to be gettin longer and longer!

1. Aux Belt or starter motor bushes
2. Possbly unevenwear or dead spots on tyre - happened to me a few times when the Goodyears were down to around 2mm
3. Change the pads first and test. When I changed the front pads and discs with a set of Mintex (£80 off ebay) after a while I got serious judder, I decided to change the pads to Pagid to start with and this cured it.

Change your fluid every 2 years min

One good tool was a long 7mm hex bit to get the caliper pins off

Thanks for the info jester. Its gonna have to be discs aswell as I think they are going to be more the culprit than the pads. There is fair lip on them they could be the original discs depending on how the car has been driven.

Not sure bout tyres thought it may be tyre rumble from tread but i suppose it could be balancing? / slight imperfection?

£80 sounds good but maybe they were just not upto the job? Looks like you can get standard discs and pads from AVS or EuroCarParts for around £100. Would love some of those Ferodo DS pads though :)

Its gonna have to be new front discs and pads and completely renew brake fluid and this should really get me on my way to sorting it.

I still need to clean sump and oil pickup too :( might have to just do an oil change to get me through winter.
