Hi guys..
hoping someone can give me some of their experiences with Insurance companies after your vehicles been stolen.

I'm currently with Adrian Flux. This morning I woke to find my car was gone from outside the house. I fitted a GPS to it on Monday, and so I tracked it to 2 miles away, parked next to a bush (see pictures below).

I'm not really sure why they parked it so close... but the plates had been changed and the driver window smashed. The car was also open. There wasn't much fuel in it (kinda glad, I always fill it up full and was going to last night, glad I didn't now).

The entire of the front glove box area has been ripped out... by ripped out I mean, not unscrewed, and there is wiring everywhere, and my keys no longer work with the car.

The boot is the same, the GPS was placed in the left compartment of the boot, where the wiring is... they did take the panel out but apparently didn't see the small tracker.

So the police came, collected the car, and it's now got an appointment with a garage tomorrow to see if it'll be repaired or wrote off. I was told there is little to no chance of catching these people... but tonight al be going and parking up where the car was to see if anyone turns up to collect it.... I have my reasons for doing this... mainly that in the boot of the car was a bag with 2 MacBook pro laptops in, and a whole load of kit totalling around £3000. I can't claim for any of it.

Anyway, my questions are this:

1. Going from the pictures (I know they aren't great) or from peoples experience... (and please, only speak if you have experience, I don't want to know about what the general people think will happen, I want to know someone whos had this!) would the car be wrote off for this kind of damage?

2. Do the insurance garages tend to do a decent job of a repair, or am I going to get my car back as some rattling mess that I will hate forever.

3. Being that these cars are targeted, and clearly the people stealing them have a decent method of programming a key quickly, is there any security devices that don't cost an arm and a leg that could be fitted? I considered a streering lock, simply because you can see it a mile away.

4. Do peoples insurance premiums go up drasticly for this? my insurance is ****** high as it is, and i'd hate to think something that wasn't my fault had caused it to rise?

5. Finally, when they do a repair, is it proper? as in, will I get my OBD2 Port back in place, will everything work, or is it just the minimum?

Thanks.

@lukus89, I won't attempt to answer any of your questions, as I don't have first hand knowledge to do so.

I'll just say I'm sorry it's happened, and that everything eventually gets sorted to your satisfaction.

EDIT: just realised I can answer question three. Get a Disklok. We have a discount deal going with them at the moment. Click here.

I'm not 100% on the disklok (or similar types of security) - they can all be removed fairly easily plus a pain in the rear to keep taking on and off.

Best option here would be to relocate the port and use a port lock (the type you plug in) - this will stop them from plugging into car, although won't stop the ***** from smashing your window!

How is the Disklok removed fairly easily? I'm interested as I use one on my car every day?

Going back to the OP, sorry to see these pictures, but I would say due to the value of your car, it should be fixable, probably a new dash needed, as a bare minimum and obviously a drivers side window. What the pics don't show is if any of the wiring has been ripped out or cut? in which case could add a considerable cost to the repair.
If you get the car and decide to keep it, worthwhile investing in a Clifford alarm with the blackJax feature. I had it fitted to a Golf GTI after it was nicked a few years ago. Google it, they are a great piece of kit.

The Disklok is a PITA to put on and take off, I agree, but It provides a good visual deterrent. Plus it takes time and noise to remove it.

Moving and locking the OBD might be more effective, but I imagine a lot more expensive, and the OP's questions asks about low cost options.

I agree - the disklok may deter the average criminal, but we aren't talking average here. These guys have equipment to clone your keys within seconds.
They will and can remove a lock within minutes if not seconds - if they want your car that's it!

If I remember correctly - you can disable the port after a few seconds without the keys ? That along with moving the port would be far more effective and doesn't cost anything (apart from a VCDS cable).

Can you tell me how this is done with VCDS? I've got the cable and such.

what was the gps tracking device you used?

Probably parked so close to the bush to hide the broken window from view as much as possible.

Rewire security one from ebay. 35 quid. Did it's job well.

Yeah I know.

I'm with you regarding the professional/casual distinction.

I have just googled the Clifford Blackjax; liking that! Only thing is, when I checked the nearest authorised installer to my area, it turns out to be in a place I wouldn't want to be driving in for fear of being car-jacked!

Thanks.
@lukus89 - Gutted for you mate :(
Unfortunately I am unable to answer any of your questions

You have PM, for obvious reasons.
If you could also send me the PM too @sidibear

can you tell me what this is exactly? cant google at moment. What is the blackJax feature?

Briefly, if you're car-jacked, just get out of the car and walk away, leaving the thief to get in and drive away. A few moments later, the ignition will shut down, the car will stop, the lights will flash and sirens will blare. Click here.

Clifford have some good security options
Move the OBD port too

hmmm.. I don't think car jacking is a big problem round here.. plus the doors lock auto at 15... that won't really stop them from nicking it again or attempting to whiel am asleep.

I'm considering a steering wheel lock just as a deterrent.

Anyone got any answers regarding the insurance?

Also, I think I worded it wrong.. i'm looking for the best deterrant.. i'd rather em not break in at all because they know they won't be able to nick it.

Also, can this still be done on the 15 plate models?

Having been a victim of total loss car theft twice in the last 10 years, and also dealing with a fair amount of salvage car repairs in that time, i would say that will be a total loss. A brand new full car wiring loom is horrendously expensive...

Couple that with labour time to remove and replace, recovery & storage costs, courtesy car, various interior trims and probably a new ECU and window... your talking serious cash monies repair!

The reason for parking so close to a bush.... hiding in plain sight, it doesnt make a broken window obvious to a random passer by.

Jesus. Scum bags!
I'm getting Revo stage1+ with SPS
The SPS can switch your ecu off from what I have read even the key can't start it and it powers down the obd socket

Or wind your window down slightly as they approach and point this at them.

Sorry, noob question but what is SPS exactly?

Anyone know how to disable the OBD2 port when no key in with VCDS??

Just remove the OBD plug completly, its only needed for diagnostic.

Cut it off the loom, replace with a multiplug from somewhere like RS Components, then attach other half of said multi plug to the end of the OBD plug wires.

Done.

Essentially the acutal OBD plug socket will become like a wheel locking nut key. Left in glovebox until needed.

I like to play about though, don't really want it removing? is there not a way to just disable it?

Could wire in a switch to one of the cables to the OBD port and hide it somewhere.

Mind explaining how that works exactly? and is it reliable?

Cheers!

You swipe the sensor to enable the power to the OBD port when needed.just a fancy switch TBH

How difficult is that to fit? a normal auto electrician be able to do it?

If you guys could like / comment / share this i'd appreciate it.. I've kinda poured my heart out about it to Audi UK...

Hi there - just come across your awful news, I've not read all messages from other members, but asked my wife about your situation as she's a motor claim handler for an indipendant loss adjustment company. If your items were locked away in the boot of your car and you have persnal belongings insurance you might be able claim for these items so I suggest you speak with your insurance providers ? If not already done

Also your motor insurance should carry out the repair as like for like ( so as new ) by approved repair specialists

Sorry to here this news mate, good luck

Cheers guys.

I don't have home insurance so can't claim for my laptops and kit in the boot. Car insurance will only pay out £100 for items in the boot... kinda gutting.

If everyone could like and share this on facebook, it might hopefully go viral a bit and force them to release an update. Worth a shot. I'd appreciate it:

OK.. Been thinking about this a while now...
Moving the OBD2 Port probably isn't the best idea.. if you see the pics, they've ripped out the entire glove box and everything else (looking for GPS I assume?).. so if the port is moved, they're going to find it anyway...

How do I go about disabling it without a key through VCDS, PLEASE!

They wont of ripped the dash apart at the scene.
They would of cloned the key then driven away first
