Thanks for looking at my post. I am looking for some ideas/opinon on what to do next with my car. It needs attention but the quotes from the dealer has shocked me to the point that I am undecided as to whether it will be worth the investment or better to cut loss and get a replacement. I really like the car and want to keep it for a good few years. It also took ages to find so am not in a hurry to chop it in as it is just what I want.
I have an A4 1.8TQS Avant (180bhp) 2000MY with ~143000 miles, Fsh, chipped, miltek exhaust, black.
At the last service the dealer idenified the following issues:
- broken valve damper on turbo (there is a clear rattle noise).
- cracked exhaust manifold (single crack that maybe weldable).
They told me I need to replace the turbo (£900) and the exhaust manifold (£400). I didn't have the money then and had just had a service, cambelt and new clutch done, costing ~£1200, so was already in a bit of shock about that!
I decided to save up and get the work done when I could afford it.
Last week, at the begining of my holidays (always the way!) there was a strong jerk when I turned on the air con, quickly followed by a strong burning smell and smoke. I turned off the air con straight away and it stopped. I spoke to the dealer again today as they had replaced the aux-belt when they did the cambelt. They told me that if that was the problem then other things would not be working either, for example the power steering. They also said a new compressor was likely required, at ~£1000.
I bought the car from a garage who sold me an extended warrenty with it. However I have since discovered that these are not really worth anything as it is nearly impossible to claim and no garage will help as they have all been burnt by these company's before.
Ok what do you recon!? Surely there must be a cheaper way to get this all sorted?
Thanks a lot !
