Facelift A bit confused

Hey guys,

I’m buying an A4 ultra sport automatic. Can anyone explain the reason why the buttons on the one I am getting has black button and the ones I see online have the metal silver ones?


I’ve added pictures below top one being the a4 I’ll be buying

I think the silver buttons are on the vehicle with the Tech Pack, the black buttons on models without it.
My first B9 model did not have the Tech Pack and had the black buttons, my current one does have the silver buttons and Tech Pack.

This is something I looked into with my last car.
Yes you can fit a high multi-function steering wheel on a non-Tech Pack car, (they're available on ebay) it is just plug n play mechanically, but I'm not sure if you will need any programming to the system for all the functions to work.

For example, the * key on the wheel has a list of assignable functions that you can set in the MMI, but this list is not visible in a car that does not have this steering wheel.

A local indie specialist quoted me £30 to swap the wheel (that I was providing) but would not confirm if any programming was needed to make all functions work. Might be worth persuing though if you want to fit it.

Exactly true, and also the larger MMI screen with the aluminium trim. Its a bit smaller in the standard version and is all black.

I believe that if the steering wheels have the same buttons they are 'plug and play' eg swap a round wheel with a flat bottomed one with the same buttons, however if they have more buttons then coding would need to take place

If it's a B9 or shared same wheel across different chassis with the same linbus version, then should fit fine.

Wonder how easy the aluminium trim round the MMI screen is to remove - I’d quite like to “wrap” mine to match the carbon atlas trim!!

Apologies if you've had this answered elsewhere, but it is basically as simple as that! The connector in the steering wheel is identical so it's plug-and-play.

I got fed up of our A4 '16-plate not having the extra buttons and the wheel having bad some marks on it (looked like the previous owner got a bit hungry). So I found a replacement from eBay with the buttons. For reference my car is a "Sport" with no Tech Pack and has the grayscale DIS.

Before it looked like this:

I then took a trip to my local Audi dealer to have the wheel fitted because:
a) The car was in for a minor service anyway!
b) It meant I didn't have to faff about taking an airbag off that I'd rather not do myself.
c) They were happy to do it for a reasonable labour charge (something like 30 mins).

Interestingly, they told me the bolt for the steering wheel is actually a stretch bolt and should be replaced, it was only ~£6 so I thought it was better to be safe than sorry...

All fitted!


As @jds_sg alluded to - I did get a call from them saying that some of the buttons appeared to not work, but this turned out to just be the '*' favourites button, the rest of the functionality worked perfectly. Not only do you get the skip track buttons that I missed so much from my A5, but you also get access to things like the favourites menu for the phone! This saves a mahooosive amount of scrolling when you want to call someone! No coding required!

There's a video from someone who offers these retrofits, showing the features you gain:

It bothered me that there was a button I couldn't use (need moar functions!!! ), so to get the '*' button working I decided that I'd take a gamble on an OBDEleven Next-Gen (SuperExpensiveEdition™) device as their app suggested you could enable the required MMI menu:


Turns out that this works great and now all of my buttons work as intended! I then spaffed my remaining OBDEleven credits on silly things like needle-sweep.

wow cheers buddy! Few questions; so soon as it's plugged in younger all the cluster features as shown in your picture?

Also did the wheel you get come with paddles or did you have to put yours on it?

Lastly could you possibly supply me with the middle number of the wheel?

The features in the DIS (like the Favourites menu under Phone) all worked straight away. I guess they're enabled on all cars by default but you just can't access them without the " ] " and " [ " buttons on the left of the wheel. It was just the menu in the MMI for the '*' button that required coding.

The part number for the non-perforated, non-flat bottom wheel with the paddles I bought is 8W0419091CL and mine came with the paddles and buttons for £79 delivered. I'm sure you could get a nice "S-line" or flat-bottom wheel if you'd prefer - just make sure it has the paddles, as retro-fitting them would be probably impossible.

Theoretically, it should be possible to buy just the buttons, pop out the old ones, and connect them in. I opted to not attempt this because the buttons were almost as much as a whole steering wheel, and the paddles connect with a very short cable to the back of the button pads and looked a bit fiddly.
