Timing belt

Hello again peeps , just found out the timing belt needs changing on our car . Audi a4 avant 2003 petrol 3ltr Quattro. 75k on the clock and service is 2000 miles or 20 days away. Its booked in Monday with a local garage and i just called Audi to check if the belt has been done and they said no ! it will cost £500 from Audi ! ! ! called the garage its booked into for a service and he said £400 or there abouts ! Can you let me know if thats a good offer ? ? ? ?

Yeah thats alright.

EDIT: makes sure it includes new pulleys and bolts too. I'm not familiar with your engine, but I would recommend doing the water pump and thermostat as a precaution if appropriate.

As per "QuattroJames" - get the water pump and thermostat done as well cause if they fail you pay the same amount again on labour to get them replaced!
 
As said above but the 400 or thereabouts might turn into 440 ish, i would say get it done at audi, i got mine done at teesside audi in nov all in for £399.78 for cambelt, waterpump labour etc and this includes a 2 yr guarentee on all the above unlimited milage should anything fail, so if your local garage dosnt include all of this, then your audi dealer is the place to get it done (in my opinion), plus to a future prospective buyer, a receipt showing audi did the change (to me anyway) is more desireable! by the way mine wasnt a 3.0 just a 1.9 tdi hope this helps.
 
My local Audi dealer wanted to charge more for my 3.0 engine, £700+, ....a minute of silence and then sucking of air through teeth and "You can do better than that I'm sure"......... and then they did it the same as a 4-cylinder in the end, ie £500'ish. Not sure why the difference - maybe access.
 
Looks like we will be eating soup for a month again ! ! i will be calling the garage and making a suggestion about the pump and thermostat and see if a deal can be struck with charm and wit !

My A4 3.0 Cabriolet needs a new Cambelt. Car has done 62,000 miles but I am sure the belt should be done at the 5 year interval, anyway have a service in 6000 miles time so mine will be at 70,000. will be ringing around Portsmouth garages soon for some quotes.
 
I just had my T'belt and water pump changed at 50k on my 2.0 sport. I was charged £171 all in. The water pump bearing had broken causing 1/2 the belt to come off the pump and also allowing coolant to leak eveywhere, lucky I caught it when I did.. all good now.

Rattling - the cooling fan is either broken or loose - no price yet
Rear break and inner drive shaft £218.00
Cam/timing belt and dampner £815.00
Service £200.00

OHHHH DEAR ! ! ! ! i know this is a fairly vague question but does that sound normal and prices about right ? ? ? ? It only went in for a service ! ! ! !

Is it too late to take it somewhere else to get a price and keep playing them off against each other to get the cheapest price?

hahah the missus is not talking to me now ( blessing in disguise ) but i think she has spoken to Audi and they are now doing the CAM ? so im hoping thats a better price. Maybe she is just getting the local specialist to service it ! ! I always think that independant garages take advantage of peoples lack of knowledge ! ! i know dealerships are not much better but finding an honest garage is hard to do unless recommended ! but the guys quotes could be genuince but im not sure ! ! ! I know we have dealt with the Audi guys before and im sure the missus can go in with charm O plenty ! !

Worth getting a price first though.

That were im lucky. Have a mate that works for himself as a mechanic. He does all the work on my cars and I know I can trust him and I get parts a trade prices, just pay him for his time basically
 
I wanna shout ere OW MUCH!!! ! I would be asking for the keys back and doing the oil changes, filters meslf! its not hard at all, save a few quid, let audi do the cambelt as it needs doing, and just ask audi to give it the once over (they normally do anyway) see if they say it needs the rest doing
 
im up for doing the service myself but the missus will want the AUDI paper so if she wants to sell it on . I will update the latest this evening , cheers all
 
turns out she spoke to the man we have used before from Audi and he has offered 10% better straight off ! offered to go to the private garage and have a chat as its only down the road ! ! ( when we told him about the rattle ) this is because less than 3 months ago the bonnet , air con etc etc was all replaced by Audi due to some poor driving by the missus' sister :) I dont think he was impressed with the private verdict ! So its getting serviced by the private and back brake is being done , then booking back to Audi for them to check it all and do the work they see fit ! and offer a much better price ! ! ! He has even given the sneaky private number for the moonlighting weekend mechanic :)

Lets hope this is it ! ! ! The next thing i want to do is look at tarting the car up some what ! ! Speed a must ! !

sorry, kind of snooping here. I am in the process of changing my timing belt using the infamous "count teeth/mark belt method" ..I took off the old belt and in rotated counterclockwise a couple of inches. As a result, I rotated back so that the marks on the belt would match the cam, however, as soon as I got it where it needed to be in rotated clockwise a couple of inches. THIS IS WHERE I GET SCARED..I rotated the cam counterclockwise to match the marks, and successfully got the belt on the correct marks. HELP...is this going to be ok or should I have rotated the cam clockwise all the way around until the marks line up rather than counterclockwise? When rotating the cam counterclockwise it was almost like the cam let loose of something and that worries me. I have tried to start it because I have to finish putting it back together..any advice?
