just seen this thread, mine seems to have the opposite problem than others.

first start of the day it takes ages to start, turns over for a good 8-10 seconds, and sometimes a bit of lumpy idle....but then for the rest of the day, even if left for a few hours it starts without a probem.

someone said it could be the heat coil (or whatever its called?)

the engine is 1.9 tdi

changed the glow plugs but still no luck

Have you tried another starter, as could easily be yours is tired mate.

nah i havent mate, im assuming thats what they ment by the starter coil? how much for a new starter mate? any in stock?

oh and thanks for the lights btw, work perfect, and shakey who i sent them too said they came very well packaged!

I'll check & get back to you, can you PM me the request please mate to remind me tuesday.

You sent them to who, sorry confused.com mate lol

yea will do mate, ha ha, they bloke at Studio Incar where my car was, thats where i got you to send them! he say you dun good on the packaging!

HELLO GUYS IM NEW HERE ITS MY FIRST AUDI BOUGHT ABOUT MONTH AGO. HAVING PROBLEM I THINK ITS SAME PROBLEM. EASY TO START WHEN COLD HARD TO START WHEN WARM AND ALSO WHEN WARM AND STARTED IT DOES SHAKE ABIT WILLL JUST A LITTLE IDILE CAN IT REALLY BE THE STARTER MOTOR. ALSO I HAVE PRICES ON BOSCH STARTER MOTOR FROM EURO ON MY TRADE ACCOUNT FOR 130 POUNDS IS THAT A GOOD PRICE AND WOULD YOU LOT SAY THAT IS PROBLEM BECAUSE I HAD ENOUGH OF AUDI NOW THOUGHT THEY WERE GOOD CARS

Are you sure the heads no cracked / porous is it using any coolant at all?

When they start to go they become hard to start when cold because of the moisure in the chambers

hot start fault can be mapped out as i have had this done on mine .

also you need to make sure that your timing is bang on as his can cause warm engine shake which is common on bkd engine
vw did a flash update which puts the fueling up on idle to cure this fault but audi didnt.

i changed every think when i had hot start fault to a NO FIX . starter / battery / injectors / injector loom / fuel pumps all to a NO FIX

yeh the car is easy to start in cold but starts bit later in cold is there anyone that can check the fault for me i will pay i am around buckinghamshire and also when temp warms cars shakes when setting in it can it be the starter motor had computer connected no faults help me guys thanks

I WOULD CHECK TIMING FIRST this has to be dun manually as computer wont show if rear cam is out .

does anyone know any person good with audis around bucks to look find problem for me and fix i will pay just want this car fixed

Nope none of those, it was the starter motor. The mechanic who defo knows his stuff said he has seen alot of these on this engine throughout the VAG range cause the problem. Wish i hadn't wasted money changing the fuel temp and coolant temp sensors first though lol.
hello mate im having same kind of problem hard to start when hot also car idles abit when temp at 90 did you have the same problem and will the starter fix this problem thanks

An old thread I know...

has anyone any more info on this...

I have A3 2.0TDI BKD with this 'hot start' problem

Have changed battery, had starter motor 're-conditioned' (tested and was working great anyway), starter cranks engine (rpm) fine

Thinking its more of a software issue/fuelling as when the coolant sensor on block is disconnected it starts with just a flick of the key both cold and hot, plug it back in and it takes a few seconds to start when engine hot

Check your ecu for a firmware update before anything else.

01 Engine for a start, then check with audi, I know bkd had an ecu update to 8000 iirc as mine was done :)

Thanks will have a look...

Forgot to say its 54 plate and on 115k so prob not had a firmware update

Hi everyone , I am having the same problem starting my A3 1.9tdi 2004 model when warm. It starts first time every time from cold but like a few people have said before once driven for 20 minutes or more so it takes 4-5 secs to start. Does anyone know what the problem is?

Common issues are coolant sensors, starters are known to suffer from heat soak as they're right on the gearbox which gets very hot, so worth a look at both.

Thanks mate. Where exactly is the coolant sensor? I have a starter motor at home. I will change it next week if its not the coolant sensor fault

Hi mate this is very common if there is no faults in the engine then the only way is to map you car and have the hot start fix done at the same time,

£200 for custom remap and hot start fix we are in Stoke on Trent

Sorry to drag up an old thread but I too have the BKD engine hot start problem. I disconnected the temp sensor in the thermostat housing as recommended and the car started instantly when hot! Reconnected and it was slow to start again. So I bought a new temp sensor as logically it pointed to that being at fault, a good OE quality one was purchased but it is exactly the same?! Hard to start when hot, disconnect temp sensor starts instantly, reconnect slow to start........

There is a lot of talk about starter motors causing this issue however in this case if it was the starter motor it would be slow to start regardless of whether the temp sensor is disconnected. Right?

I would just like to know if anyone has had the same symptoms and got to the bottom of it?

Thank you

There's 2 temp sensors, try replacing both & yes also starter is an issue as it suffers from heatsoak from the gearbox.

Thank you. It cant be the starter as the engine starts instantly when the temp sensor in the thermostat housing is diconnected. Where is the other temp sensor located?

Hello guys! I'm an engine engineering and I have same problem as everyone here with my golf mk4 1.9tdi. I tried everything and changed everything but still the same. It's not battery or starter, do not waste money. It's been over a year I fixed doing something else. I got a relay a1 from an old Alfa Romeo and connected to the wire of temperature sensor. The relay cuts off the power when I open the ignition and turns on the power when the engine starts. For over a year the engine starts perfect. I hope I helped you somehow

its either a tired starter motor ,which can be stripped cleaned and rebuilt easily for nothing or can do the hot start fix in the mapping which takes just a few minutes and lowers the rpm speed required by the starter motor for diesel to be injected . anyone who has the capability of reading there map can send it me and il do the hot start fix for free
