dodgy fuel guage

hi guys my gf bought a3 1.8 sport non turbo ,we thought it had half tank of fuel but when driving home on motorway the light came on did.nt want 2 risk runnin out and theres no fuel comp either . when we got home and turned car off the guage went down to top of reserve then when u put ign on the guage goes to empty then up to just under half a tank i checked the wire,s at sender and they look clean and ok. we keep fillin it up but when gets down to just under half a tank light comes on , any ideas

Could be a problem with the sender, best to whip it out and have a look but be ****** carefull if there's a half decent amount of fuel in the tank. I'm sure the GF would have your balls on a plate if you manage to torch her new car!.

Was a known thing on the TT & 8L, had on my S3 & after few days it fixed itself.

I would try running until empty with a petrol can of course, fill up again & do few times, then see if corrects as have heard after few refills it has corrected itself, mine did.
