Hello,

I bought a 2010 2.0TFSI Avant Quattro 6-speed Manual a few months ago and the other day it developed a road speed dependent whine whilst on a trip in Gloucester. The local garage there have been diagnosing it and narrowed it down by running it on a ramp to where the driveshaft meets the gearbox on the left and side. They went to change the driveshaft but the noise persisted once removed so they've concluded it's likely to be the gearbox.

I'm not having difficulty because I can't find anyone to work on the gear box. The specialists I have spoken to say they can't work on them because you can't get hold of the parts. The Audi service (and then parts) department I spoke to weren't enormously helpful but seemed to confirm this.

It looks like at the moment my only option is a second hand gearbox off eBay. Apparently my gearbox is the LLT. Does anyone have any experience with these gearboxes or know anyone who does?

Thanks!

No particular experience with this gearbox, but usually 6 speed manuals are bullet proof. Used to have a 2012 A4 Allroad with 177PS 2.0 diesel, 6-speed manual gearbox was sweet as a nut. What’s the mileage? Did you drop the gear oil, any contamination or swarf?

Well that's part of my reason for posting. Some of the gearbox specialists I've spoken to have said the reason there aren't any parts or reconditioned gearboxes is because the fail so frequently but then I can't see a wash of threads of people similarly stuck. It's only done about 80k

Unfortunately I can't check the oil myself as it's stuck a 100 miles away but perhaps I need to get it to a specialist who can do a more detailed diagnosis.

I've read bout this, and there is a company in Poland - I think, has designed and built a fixture-machine that can be mounted on the side of the trans unit, that bores out a small area so that an insert, designed by that same company, can be pressed and and the bearing etc built back into the gearbox - this was only meant to be an issue with a select few 6MT - quattro gearbox models.

If caught early, Audi did revise how these areas were built up to stop that happening again (supposedly), but once the wear in the gearbox/trans housing exceeded what was tolerated then no fix was deemed possible - other than what that company in Poland could do without removing the trans.

Edit:- maybe there could be a benefit in owners of these cars with that gearbox, getting both sides rebuilt with bearings and shims to the later Audi workshop spec!

Another Edit:- if what I've read and written above is true, then maybe find a way to contact that place in Poland and send away your gearbox for a proper fix - or get a gearbox specialist with knowledge of this issue, examine and rebuild both sides to the later Audi spec if that used gearbox is still within the recoverable state.

Thank you, that's very interesting. The problem seems to be that they can't get hold of the bearings. Some people have just said they can't work on the gearbox because parts aren't available but one chap was more specific saying the bearings they replace during a rebuild aren't available either from audi or their general specialist bearing suppliers. This sounds like it rules out having it rebuilt.

I must say it seems odd to me. I would assume as you do that someone could rebuild it. I have found some reconditioned boxes deep in German websites so presumably someone can get hold of them but it seems tricky.

You don't know any details of this Polish company? If there was someone that could work on my I'd be very interested.

Is it not the front diff bearing, it went on mine but is sounded more of a grinding noise, it was the right front driveshaft on mine though and I was able to grab the driveshaft and move it slightly up/down/side to side because of the worn bearing.

I did manage to change it in situ without removing the gearbox.

The new bearing was available from TPS for about £30

Here is one link to the A5OC forum thread:- https://www.a5oc.com/threads/quattro-flange-play.129425/

The YouTube video link that I copied/saved that covered the workshop in Poland unfortunately will now not open - I hate when that happens, a possible life saver disappears!

But, if I found it on YouTube, maybe you could also find it or something like it.

Maybe search on the A5OC forum.

Thank you for your help. It's taken me a few days to get my head around this but I now see exactly what you mean. I need to get the workshop where it is to confirm the play or get it home but this seems like a very realistic possibility with a potential fix. I'm hoping that chap that had some improved parts manufactured still has some. Fingers crossed and thanks for your help
