Does anyone bother with the data plans from Cubic, is there *any* point to doing so, over just using your phone's data.

Tbh it depends if you're bothered about turning on hotspot everytime or not, tbh you could add a an NFC tag & auto run to turn on hotspot when you get in the car, droid has auto off when no devices connect for a period of time, multiple ways to do it, but can't see point in having another subscription unless money isn't the issue, then I'd have it.

It's really very unlikely that I would ever need the car's hotspot, everyone has phones and the Cubic service is limited (as far as I can see) to 9mbit/sec - why would you connect to a hotspot which was slower and had a smaller data allowance than you phone's native 4G/5G connection.

The only advantage I could see is if it is capable of roaming between UK operators which might improve your chance of getting some sort of signal

I was referring to your phone hot spot not the car, so cars WiFi connects to your phone for net access

Can you do it that way around? Didn't think that you could, in any case I thought that you needed to connect to the car's wi-fi to use Android Auto.

Happy to be corrected on your chassis, seen it work on others fine, but only one way to find out lol

If using AA or Carplay it should be using the phone data anyway, are you referring to any other car systems that don't integrate via phone connection AA & Carplay.

I'm not even sure I've ever seen an option to connect the car to a phone hot spot rather than the other way around.

Yes, if you don't have a data plan enabled the phone will recognise it can't use the car's wifi for internet and will use 4G/5G - which is how I have things at the moment.

I just wondered if I had missed some killer functionality that only having a data-plan for the car, but I don't think there is.

Car has WiFi, so should be able to find your phones hotspot regardless of the data plan tbh, my A5 has 3g high, has WiFi, kinda pointless tbh as it's not got Google maps & that integration was removed by Audi & slow anyway or at least the updating was, although there's a firmware hack to keep it going, my point is I've never known a car that has data with hotspot to not have the reverse ability, however Audi change there minds all the time & anything to make a buck, so if they're forcing data plan for cars systems then that's a shxt.

so if they're forcing data plan for cars systems then that's a shxt.
No, the car has it's own data connection for updates etc (and system data sent back to the mothership) but you pay for that as part of the connected service subscription so the "WiFi hotspot" dataplans are not needed to make the system work. They literally just mean that you get to use the car's WiFi as a hotspot for internet access rather than just for Android Auto (or, presumably Apple CarPlay).

I understand how the systems work bud lol, worked allot in this arena.

My point is as I think we're at slight cross purposes.

Are they now enforcing there built in data plans for the car to utilise which of course won't connect to the "mother ship" if you don't subscribe or are they still allowing the car to use it's WiFi to connect to your phones hotspot aka access point, that's the overall question we're asking.

If Audi have removed that ability to use external hotspots like home WiFi or phones WiFi, then that's a shxt as basically you have to pay for the cars data plan with whichever company they use eg Cubic.

If it's an esim then no reason they can't be ported to someone else, but if the whole Cubic system is geared as a portal for music etc & isn't just a data pathway, then kinda stuck with Cubic.

Little spitballing here also

Lol little snippet from few years ago, it's kinda as I thought, but maybe you can get round it.

Cubic Telecom SIM - what a rip off - anyone know if you can insert your own ? | Audi e-tron Forum https://share.google/sTRfNSUzugP5d3ntw

AIUI the car has a permanent connection, completely separate from anything to do with the car's WiFi hotspot, used to be a physical SIM but now likely an eSIM which is used for telemetry and any paid for online services/over the air updates. You can't use your phone's wifi hotspot for that but there's no directly visible cost to the user other than subscribing to the relevant remote service. If you don't subscribe to anything then the car will still send telemetry.

Then there is the car WifFi hotspot - connect your phone to use AndroidAuto or CarPlay - Android will certainly recognise if this has no Internet connection and will use its own 4G/5G connection for data, Google Maps etc. there's no requirement to buy a data plan.

Then there is the car's hotspot plus a data plan from Cubic - that way you can connect a device which will use the car as it's internet connection but with less data and slower speeds than using your phone, why would you?

I don't recall any option to connect the car to a phone or other device so that the car is using the phone's data - I will double check when I get back to the car later.

Yeah so basically they've shuffled things around again lol.

By all reports Cubic seem to be a rip off.

OK you're right - I can connect the car to the phone's wifi hotspot, don't remember that being a possibility on the S3. Not sure where it gets me though and less convenient than having the phone pick up the car's wifi hotspot (which seems to be needed for Android Auto to work anyway).

Still, live and learn :)

Glad it's working for her bud, I was sure it would, tbh they're probably using the same embedded SIM for all systems just using data ID to pass freely through the same network.

We both learnt something today
