Hi chaps, what do you think about the chances of me getting my a/c working again, it hasn’t worked for roughly eight to nine years, it stopped working when the bottom of the compressor rotted out so I know I would need a replacement, also a receiver drier, would I be throwing my money away, I intend keeping the car as it’s in good condition and I love it, it’s a 2004 1.9tdi Quattro Avant

Only you can decide.. if it's in good condition, you love it & intend to keep it maybe it's worth getting done.
Could try & get a 'worst case' quote? and judge it from that maybe?
Mines not worked for a few years now, as I've mentioned in your cambelt post.. mines not in the best condition now so I've put off doing anything other than oil changes/things i can do myself..
If it had a few less miles (193k) & the bodywork was ok I'd be more inclined to get things sorted.
Got bad rust patch on the boot lid, wings showing signs of bubbling on the edges.. but currently not too noticeable.. but also the rear passenger side must have had a knock & repair before my time.. it never noticed for many years of ownership but now has got crack lines in it!.. so as much as I love mine I'd be daft to spend the money that it needs now!
However.. i'm still at a loss as to what else to get now as nothing new (and affordable for me) appeals to me really & i don't hear of many cars as reliable as the old ones

Well from looking at those photos and your plan to keep the car I'd be inclined to spend the money & get it done. (I do love the B6 Avant!)

(what are the front upper arm rubbers like? thats the one that scares me the most with these cars!.. seems like a pig of a job & expensive just for the parts.)

Just had all the upper and lower arms and bushes done
Also had to have two new engine mounts
I was driving down a lane about 30mph and there was a large piece of iron sticking up from the surface of the road which I didn’t see, I hit it and it nearly bought the car to a stop, couldn’t see any damage and it drove home albeit with a vibration, later my trusted go to garage put it on the lift and the driver side engine mounting was torn open so I’ve just had a new pair of mountings

But after all that i reckon you've gone far enough now to go ahead and get the aircon fixed!.. (unless you're not bothered about aircon i guess)

The other issue i've got with mine that has just popped into my head after all this rain we've just had.. i still can't find how water is getting into the passenger front footwell.. it's not the usual suspects!.. i had to replace the ccm module a while ago as it must have got damp (it actually looked ok?) but the foam under the carpet was soaked.. so mine, i think has sadly got too many issue so warrant the spending.. it looks great from a few feet away lol.. and drives fine.

I had new front discs and pads at the same time as I had the upper and lower arms done and it cost me £1099
Have you checked under the battery to see if the bulkhead drains are blocked
That’s usually a place where water can get in to the footwell

Thats price isn't as bad as i thought it might be from the 'pinch bolt' horror stories & the cost of the arms.
As for my leak, yes i have checked the drain holes under the battery & the brake servo, they're clear, also removed & resealed the cabin filter housing. I did wonder about the windscreen as an option, I have pulled the carpet back (on numerous occasions!) and poured water over the screen, a little trickle seemed to be coming in around the battery area but lower down, so need to pull the battery out & see if there is anything down there maybe.. Windscreen would be the only other thing i could think..
