Audi has revealed more details about the upcoming A2 e-tron, claiming it will become the most efficient production Audi ever built.
According to preliminary WLTP figures, the new compact EV is capable of consuming just 12.8 kWh per 100 km, making it one of the most efficient electric cars on sale when it arrives later this year.
The impressive figure isn't down to a single breakthrough. Instead, Audi says it's the result of improvements across the entire car, from aerodynamics and battery technology to the electric motor and software that manages it all.
Inspired by the Original A2
The A2 badge has always been associated with efficiency.Back in the early 2000s, the original aluminium-bodied Audi A2 became famous for pushing fuel economy to new levels, particularly in its ultra-efficient 3L guise.
Audi CEO Gernot Döllner believes the new A2 e-tron carries that same philosophy into the electric age.
"The original A2 made efficiency its trademark. The new A2 e-tron continues that vision with outstanding efficiency, everyday usability and a clear focus on what customers expect from modern electric mobility."
Aerodynamics Play a Huge Role
One of the biggest contributors to the A2 e-tron's efficiency is its slippery shape.With a drag coefficient of just 0.24, it becomes the most aerodynamic compact Audi ever produced.
Audi has paid close attention to airflow, incorporating features such as:
- Air curtains around the front bumper
- Redesigned wheel arch airflow management
- Gap reducers around the wheels
- An active front grille that remains closed during normal driving before opening when additional cooling is required
A Smarter Electric Drive
The A2 e-tron uses a 140 kW permanently excited synchronous electric motor, but efficiency improvements go much deeper than the headline power figure.Audi has redesigned several key components, including:
- Silicon carbide power electronics to reduce electrical losses
- A revised electric motor with thinner laminations for improved efficiency
- A new low-friction transmission oil
- A taller final drive ratio to reduce motor speeds during motorway driving
New LFP Battery Technology
Power comes from a 61 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, using Audi's latest cell-to-pack construction.Unlike some other battery chemistries, LFP batteries are known for their durability, safety and long service life. They can also be charged to 100% on a regular basis without the same concerns over long-term degradation.
Audi has also focused on reducing charging losses.
Thanks to revised cooling strategies and improved battery management software, the A2 e-tron achieves an impressive 89.6% charging efficiency when connected to a home wallbox, meaning more of the electricity drawn from the grid actually ends up stored in the battery.
Your Car Can Power Your Home
The A2 e-tron will also support bidirectional charging, allowing owners to use the battery for more than just driving.Functions include:
- Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), enabling external devices to be powered directly from the car.
- Vehicle-to-Home (V2H), allowing the A2 e-tron to act as a home energy storage system when paired with compatible charging equipment.
Efficiency Through Software
Audi says the hardware only tells part of the story.Much of the A2 e-tron's efficiency comes from new software that constantly monitors battery condition, charging behaviour and thermal management to ensure the car operates as efficiently as possible in everyday driving.
The result is an EV designed not only to travel further on each charge, but also to retain its performance and battery health over many years of ownership.
Coming Later This Year
The all-new Audi A2 e-tron is expected to make its full debut in autumn 2026, becoming Audi's new entry point into electric motoring.With efficiency figures like these and a name that already carries plenty of history among Audi enthusiasts, it'll certainly be one to watch.
