I have an Audi A6 C7 the speakers started to crackle and then one day all sound stopped. The screen and the function buttons still work fine. I get in the car and no sound at all from media, stereo or phone, then all of a sudden it comes alive and then it might stop, or work for a three hour car journey, totally random. The only thing that does not work ever is the phone. The other caller can hear me but I cannot hear them.
Been to two different experts, both said "oh its the amplifier in the boot, gets water damage, easy to fix" (this is what Chat GTP says). However they both say it appears that the ONLY amplifier is the head unit in the centre console.
Dear Audi experts is this the case?
Anyone heard of this problem?
I was thinking of buying a second hand unit Part no. 4G1035021D and getting it installed and re-programmed.
Car is 2015 plate, 138k, am I putting circa £600 down the drain?

Passed its MOT this morning and they plugged it in, the log showed various faults to speakers and the bus. Weirdly the pop up screen has been function in terms of scrolling through the menus but then this morning the screen is blank. On the way to the garage no sound form radio, on the way back stereo working but not through all speakers, the driver info display showing the correct radio station and the volume worked.
Could this be the work of a mouse eating the wires ??

Any signs of water ingress in the rear quarters etc?

No, completely dry. All the stuff I have found on the internet says look in the rear quarters for the amp but in my case the only amp as confirmed by two auto electric places is whats in the centre console above the climate control, there is nothing else not even under the seats. its a Harmon Kardon unit.

It must have an amp, you sure they looked properly, under driver's seat?

Both garages have searched everywhere in the car and they agree with this AI result.
"Because your vehicle has unbranded speaker grilles, it is equipped with the Audi Standard Sound System (also known as the "Audi Sound System", production option code 9VD).
The critical thing to know for this specific sound package is that the audio amplifier is built directly inside the central infotainment unit (the 4G1035021D module you asked about earlier)." This is the part number for the box in the centre console
Its all very odd which is why I am reaching out on this forum as no one appears to have come across this version and why I am going slightly nuts

Urmm strange as I believed HK system has an amp, so you don't have HK speaker grills, as it maybe an HK head unit as they do make them, but not the full spectrum speaker system.

You might be right but there seem to be so many variants that a single basic unit could be the case especially as the pop up screen on the dash is now starting to malfunction. I think the whole box is slowly melting down. I have found several on Ebay and one seller who says he has removed the component protection so it is plug and play, is this possible without screwing up the rest of the cars systems ?
