Steering rack coding problem

Hi everyone,

I’m new to the forum. Just posted in the welcome section. I was wondering if anytime could help or for me someone please.

The steering rack on my 2010 S4 had been knocking for a while and needed replacing. I didn’t want to spend the megabucks on a new Audi rack, and rather than buy a “reconditioned” unit, I was advised it would be better to buy a used proper Audi unit.

I thought it made sense, so I sourced one on eBay. However, after being at the garage I use for a couple of weeks, they can’t code/program it to the car.

They said they have been speaking to various people, including Audi, trying to code it but had no luck. They said it seems that a rack cannot be removed from one car and fit onto another.

Usually there’s a way to overcome things like this, when it comes to coding/programming things. Is anyone able to offer any help or advice on how to get around this please I really want to try and avoid having to spend over £1500 (plus fitting) for a new rack from Audi.

I'd think that what you've heard from Audi is to be expected - only new parts ordered in through them is what is acceptable (to them).

Being a 2010 car, your rack will be hydraulic - but is it the same part number as what is currently fitted to your car, if you had scanned the car while the original rack was fitted, you would be able to have saved the coding and the HW etc "part" numbers, and would now know what the difference was - as a starting point.

Any possibility of getting that info now - to compare original with "new"?

Edit:- did you check your car's PR: code for the steering system?
There seems to be 3 options, namely PR:1N1 = 8T0 422 066C PR:1N3 = 8T0 422 066B PR:1N7 = 8T0 422 066A > 8T0 422 065S

Another Edit:- my January 2011 build S4 has PR:1N3 Servotronic - ie variable speed assist steering.
