Good morning, had the strangest thing happen a week ago whilst driving to the East coast and wondered what people thought and do i need anything looking at as a preventative measure... so here goes,
Traveling to the coast is a steep hill called Garowby hill, we all got stuck behing an articulated lorry, going up the hill at approx 15/20 mph we got to the overtake lane, 2 cars in front passed and i dropped to 3rd to pass..... as i was passing changed to 4th but it soon slowed down and back down to 3rd, again it soon screamed to be changed so went to 4th and soon enough needed dropping, when i did, an almighty pop occured and i am not exaggerating when i say the amount of white smoke that came from the exhaust was like being in the clouds, as its a dangerous hill and stopping was not an option i continued to the top of the hill and when i depressed the clutch to change gear the revs hit the roof and i had no choice but to just turn ignition off and roll safely to a stop on a grass verge, worth noting the EML had lit up at this point.
obviously left engine off whilst trying to work out what had happened then went to try and start the car.... just a clicking sound and at that point i feared the worst.
I went to check everything, the air intake cover had blown off, so replaced that... checked oil and looked for leaks, everthing was ok, rear bumper was sprayed with oil, plugged a thinkdiag dongle in and no codes came back strangely, tried to start again and this time it fired up but sounded really rough and smoked again so switched off....... spent a fair while calling people then to maybe arrange picking us up but also gave me time to actually think of what was happening, the smoke was obviously oil/excess fuel being burnt off in the exhaust so with nothing to lose i fired her up again and this time it sounded slightly louder but not as rough, the smoke faded to almost nothing so decided to pull out and continue our journey, after a minute the smoke was gone and no exaggeration she purred all the way, never missed a beat for the week we was away and the journey home.
The car is due a service anyway but is there anything else i should look at ?
My car is a 2.0 Diesel ( 138 CFFB ), car was fully loaded with 4 passengers, luggage at the time.
Thankyou
