Cam belt change cost

My 2004 1.9 Tdi Quattro is due a cam belt and water pump change, I’ve had a couple of quotes of £800 and £870, is that a bit steep
last one I had done four years ago was £450
 
Sounds about right. I work on basis on basis of 60k miles or 5 years, whatever comes sooner. Use genuine waterpump. I’d also be tempted to throw on new thermostat, again genuine.
 
Did you get it done in the end? and what mileage/time did change yours at? did you end up paying £800+?

I'm sat with the dilemma with mine, it's on 193000 miles now and is starting to look get a bit tatty (rust patch on the boot lid and the saggy headliner).. got a little water leak that i can't solve and is overdue a cambelt.. (plus could do with a turbo really) but i've only been doing 2.5-3k miles a year in it now a days.. (still been changing the oil every year mind you.. can't not lol)

I was always on the 5yrs 60k miles with mine & my 8p A3 that i also have but i'm way over due on time with mine now (think it was october 2019), but mileage wise i've only done 23k miles since it was last done.. I did get a quote of around £430 for cambelt and waterpump which i was surprised at to be honest, i thought it was going to be nearer the £700+ mark now a days, but they did mention that Audi don't state a 'time' anymore.. just mileage (but my thinking is that's maybe more for more modern non PD cars? i don't know).. if my car was worth something i'd stick to the old skool time frames as i do with oil changes but with the low mileage i've done and the fact it's not really worth much now i'm torn with what to do.. just wish i could do these jobs myself.
 
It’s being done tomorrow, got a price of £610 plus vat which brings it up to £758
Out of curiosity I called Audi main dealership thinking they wouldn’t want to know but they said no problem and there all in price would be £829.
 
I wonder if my price of £430 was a 'mate of a mate's rate ... a friend put me onto the garage and they use him to buy parts so may be discounted.. makes me think i should have gone for it now rather than put my head in the sand.
I keep thinking i'll start looking for a new car but can't muster any enthusiasm for anything much.. and being i don't drive around that much i'd be spending a lot of cash on an ornament.. so i dunno lol

Did you do decent mileage since the last cambelt change? or was it a years thing?
If it wasn't for all the other things i should do to the car i'd get it done i think but when you add up everything to get it looking a bit better i'd be in the thousands... and at 193k miles is it worth it now.. still love the b6 avant though lol! ****** things (need to find a low mileage one, the mrs would kill me)
 
Four years since the last one and only 5000 miles, I know I don’t use it much I’ve been retired for the past three years
Your garage may be using after market parts to keep the price low
Genuine parts going on mine, 153 k on the clock
 
Wow.. 5000 miles in 4 years!.. you use yours less than me lol
Making me feel bad for neglecting mine now.
How is yours doing for rust? mine is showing signs on of bubbling a bit on the wings the main issue is right in the middle of the boot lid under the number plate. looks bad now sadly.
And yes, the garage would be using non genuine parts for the cambelt kit so there's a cost difference there. But I do make sure they use the decent brands at least
 
Rust wise I had two new front wings about five years ago other wise it’s all good
I’ve had it for eleven years and just before I got it it had a map done and it puts out around 190 bhp, it’s like a rocket ship
Won’t be changing it anytime soon
 
Yeah i do struggle with what else i'd get after mine (realistic options that is) hence still having it. Been such a good car, as was my mk4 golf pd130 too.

I have been lucky with the front wings judging by a lot that i've seen for sale & on the road.. it's the boot lid for me which lets it down & the rear spoiler needs painting, thats gone bad really quickly for some reason.
190bhp sounds ideal.. mine is standard and goes well, yours must be spot on.
Making me want to tidy mine up now lol.. the mrs would kill me.. i've had a few limp mode situations from the turbo over the years & it sounds like darth vader when you let off the throttle so don't think a remap would help that lol.. (could get an upgrated one i guess..... )
