I pointed a good friend in the direction of a near-mint y2k A4 1.8 petrol manual recently. It had one previous owner from new and 60k miles on the clock, always garaged too by the looks of it.

As you would expect its in great condition, but he still has the usual new owner checks to do - drain holes under the battery, 2nd key to re-code etc.

However - he has exactly the same issue as my A6 where the water and oil gagues don't do anything. My car is the 1.9TDI, his is the 1.8 petrol

Does anyone know things to check & change to get these working on a petrol A4 B5?

thanks

Oil temperature possibly combined oil capacity and temperature sensor in sump. For coolant, usually thermostat. Pretty sure 1.8 is timing belt, so for peace of mind renew if not done in last 5 years, along with water-pumpaAnd tensioner pulley. I’d also scan with VCDS for any logged errors codes. B5 door strips notorious for rotting out. Tell-tale is bulges along length.

Missing pixel on display also common, along with interior button wear on windows, climate, etc. Now an old car at 26 years old, so track down via specialist parts. For servicing, Mann filters, Meyle HD or Lemforder for suspension.
