Audi S3 8V - Auto Dimming Virtual Cockpit & Screen

Hi Guys,

I have an Audi S3 8V 2016, love the car but since owning I have dealt with one small but annoying issue...

When the lights are switched on either manually or set to auto the virtual cockpit and MMI screen backlights do not change brightness at all meaning I have to manually adjust using the control knob just below the light control knob to the right of the steering wheel depending on if it is day or night.

Should this not be automatic depending on if my headlights are on or off? Or controlled by a light sensor somewhere?

I have a VCDS cable and software so can make any change required with that, but not sure there is a setting related to this as surely it would be active by default?

Any help would be much appreciated.

There is an ambient light sensor in the virtual cockpit but its location is more suited to left hand drive vehicles.

I found a happy medium brightness which is ok for anything from bright sunlight to night time rural driving, that is until the garage cranks it up to max whenever it goes in for a service.

IIRC there is a separate brightness setting in the MMI for the pop up screen

I get no auto dimming at all which is what I am trying to figure out, the ligh level stays exactly the same unless manually adjusted.

There is a seperate brightness for the MMI pop up screen, but turning the control knob near the light controls / steering wheel does adjust both the virtual cockpit and MMI screen at the same time so you can set the MMI screen slightly higher or lower brightness and the control knob will dim or brighten it along with the virtual cockpit while respecting its individual brightness level so if MMI was set brigher it will dim less.

I just expected the car to automatically dim both when the headlights are on without having to use the manual control.

I always go off model year, not manufacturing year. Facelift model year started from 2017 (while manufactured as you say as of September 2016).

Mine is manufactured in 2014, but carries model year 2015 (also reflected by the VIN)

It has made a huge difference, I followed the steps to adjust the phototransistor currently with the suggested values:
  • X1 > 00 00
  • X2 > 00 0A
  • X3 > 00 14
  • X4 > 00 28
  • X5 > 00 64
Which makes the transistor "dimming_characteristic_curve_adjustment_internal_phototransistor" more sensitve it light at lower levels during the day and so far so good, it has been quite bright during the day here though so just waiting for a rainy or less sunny day to make sure its in the sweet spot and will adjust more if needed.

You are fortunate, but also LHD so your sensor is closer to the window ive heard this can be a cause of the issue.
Brightness is only an issue as in the day I would like it bright and at night dim so I adjust to dim at night manually but as the sensor doesn't pickup daytime light it remains dim.
If I adjust to bright during the day it remains bright at night. Hoping this helps!
