Stumbled across this on Volkswizard's channel on YouTube on his imported Hong Kong Golf 7.5 GTI. Didn't even know it was a thing. How prevalent do you think it is? Apparently rife on cars on 3 year PCP deals. Mileage can be cross referenced with VCDS for engine and gearbox ECU if you suspect.

These things have been around for a while. I was always told when looking to buy a car, to check the transmission mileage matches the odometer reading in VCDS, which is what Andrew At Volkswizard recommends also.

It’s worth noting the transmission mileage is recorded in km, and in the UK we use miles on the odometer, so you’ll need to convert the transmission reading to miles. Hopefully it should match your odometer!

I’m sure the mileage blocking inventors will soon try to invent things that block the mileage to all parts of the car. It’s a game of cat and mouse, and as all instrument clusters are digital these days rather than physical rotating numbers, it’s a case of clever software and IT hacking that can deceive unsuspecting buyers.

Yeah I know someone who has a mileage blocker on his RS3, unless you've got a friend with VCDS or a garage is willing to do it it's hard to know before buying the car.
