Got a new to me 2016 SQ5 with the bitdi engine. It’s had some work done to it by the previous owner regarding the DPF. Anyhow, there’s an exhaust leak coming from the turbocharger area - perhaps from one of the gaskets around the turbocharger. Before I start working on it, I wanted to know if it’s possible to remove the turbocharger assembly without dropping the gearbox or engine as the space looks incredibly tight.

I’ve removed a turbocharger from the ordinary 3.0 tdi before and that’s a doodle, but I don’t have a lift or the facilities to remove this engine if it comes to it and would rather not give this to a garage unless necessary.

Thanks in advance.

There should be a few DIY videos on the turbo replacement for an sq5 on youtube...

Nothing on YouTube or the interwebs that I could locate. You know, I don’t understand Audi, they design a lovely short compact v6 diesel and stick a turbocharger behind it making it as long as a I6 engine. Why not stick the turbo in the valley of the engine and have all the egr cooler nonsense somewhere at the back near the exhausts.

Because engineers will take the hard route to get owners back for maintenance jobs. Most of the mechanics hate how stuff is relocated and made harder, but they understand it means more money coming in.

I'm hating the amount of plastic engine internal parts they use nowadays.. they don't last and will break at least once in 5 years time.

But it is how it is... just remove what is in the way... and hope you don't accidentally break other things.
