2019 40 TDI - P0087 – Fuel Rail / System Pressure Too Low

HI All,


Background was a loud ticking / clacking noise from the engine bay – frequency increases with RPM, but car still drove OK. After a few more miles of driving, car gave a ‘drive system fault’ with reduced power, it was now not possible to re-start the car. Fault code P0087 – Fuel Rail / System Pressure Too Low.


What has made this more challenging is that it happened in the Orkney islands – and with zero availability of local garages to even look at the car, the AA is transporting the car back to my local VW / Audi specialist, some 650 miles south! A hire car was provided so no personal drama.


And interested in thoughts as to what is causing this. I guess I will find out soon enough so am mentally preparing myself for an expensive repair!

Fuel pump probably exploded and filled the system with metal filings taking out the injectors, lines, tank

Worst case scenario but we had a 2018 A5 in with the same issue. £3-4K repair

Best case scenario could be a sensor but always prepare for the worst

Sounds nasty – and am hoping less catastrophic in my case. Despite the ticking noise car ran OK – engine did not cut out, just could not be restarted after ‘drive system fault’ appeared.


Keeping fingers crossed it is not the worst-case scenario…….

So – I have the diagnosis. Over fueling from injectors on cylinders 3 and 4. The injectors themselves had come loose and that what was causing the knocking / clacking noise. So – it needs 2 new injectors along with a new battery. High pressure fuel pump is fine.


I though this did not sound too bad – still little change from £2.5K!
