I know they swirl easily just from washing but I’ve noticed a couple of long scratches on mine and wondering how that’s happened as I don’t think I’ve had grit in my wash mit or anything. Suppose a stone could have flicked up or something maybe

I'm starting to notice that every plastic bit on the car is like one or max two layers of paint, it's insanely easy scratched. Window piano panels still haven't had the joy meeting the road rock chips, but i got some large scratches on both mirror covers and you can easily tell just how totally unacceptably thin the coat is, were talking nanometer layers here.

I can't fathom this being transferred to more expensive models (like the e-tron)...

My door Pillars also got scuffed from a drivethrough carwash...Apparently they are losing all piano gloss parts for the new models in the future. I asked Audi at my last service two weeks ago for a quote to replace the panels , if its not too expensive i will get the swapped but i am yet to hear back from them.

Agree it's really annoying. I've had a ceramic coat from new and only wash by hand. It's not full-proof but certainly reduces the chances of getting scratched. I've not noticed anything of concern on mine so far - fingers crossed!

i made this. and everthing is quite good now

I find the outside parts more problematic, they'd need some protection for frequent washing that eventually scratches them. Interior-wise, I'd only hope the center console had some more durable material. I actually like the dash design with the fluent screen integration using the shiny black surroundings. There's no need to touch them so they don't get dirty or scratchy. I think it doesn't look better wrapped, rather the opoposite.

I haven't had major issues with the center console either since I'm not keeping much stuff floating around in the car. When I had cars with more storage space in the center I had a bad habit of letting random stuff just pile up there. Pens, coins, paperclips and whatever dropped off my hand. I was a bit concerned about the storage bins of the 8Y when I first bought one but thought "well I don't actually need that stuff in my car", and since that, I've had a whole lot cleaner car, which actually sparks me on taking better care of it.

What’s the best way to clean the piano black around the gear selector? As I’ve not cleaned mine for like a year so it’s got dried bits/water spots on it, so I’m not sure the best way to wipe it without scratching the dirt round it first time? I’ve got some auto finesse interior cleaner spray, should I spray that on it and let it soak in so the dried stuff goes soft and wipes off without scratching?

For the piano black area around the gear selector, I just use some dash cleaner spray (I'm still using the one that came as part of a cleaning pack that I got with a previous Mercedes A35). I don't spray it directly onto the area, just spray it onto a microfibre cloth and then wipe the area, comes up a treat. Smells nice too lol.

I’ve been to scared to clean/wipe it since I’ve had the car from new lol. Been 2 years now though…

It's fine using the spray onto the cloth method, then just wipe it gently, don't go "scrubbing" it hard otherwise it may well scratch as that piano black plastic does scratch quite easily.

Maybe use a soft dust brush first to swipe away some innocent looking sand particles. Those are most likely the cause of scratches, if you start to wipe with a cloth right away.
