My 20vt sport failed it's MOT last month, I had planned to part ways with it, it's currently on marketplace where I've had no end of folk waste my time. Anyway, I've come to the conclusion that rather than buy another beater, if rather fixed my Audi. It's a great car, and they're getting a bit of a rarity on the road these days.
The biggest issue with the MOT was play in steering rack detected in steering wheel. Tester said it's probably your UJ, perhaps it's come loose or something. Anyway I've taken a few bits off to access UJ and steering column and got a big spanner on the UJ knuckle, jammed it against brake pedal, steering wheel is moving still when I'm holding UJ still.
Does the UJ go all the way through the steering column and have the spline for the steering wheel on it?
How difficult is it to get out and replace?
Or is it more likely the steering column itself?
Presumably a MK4 golf part would also fit, but are they generic for all front wheel drive cars or would I have to get a 1.8t specific part? Thanks in advance
