My 20vt sport failed it's MOT last month, I had planned to part ways with it, it's currently on marketplace where I've had no end of folk waste my time. Anyway, I've come to the conclusion that rather than buy another beater, if rather fixed my Audi. It's a great car, and they're getting a bit of a rarity on the road these days.

The biggest issue with the MOT was play in steering rack detected in steering wheel. Tester said it's probably your UJ, perhaps it's come loose or something. Anyway I've taken a few bits off to access UJ and steering column and got a big spanner on the UJ knuckle, jammed it against brake pedal, steering wheel is moving still when I'm holding UJ still.

Does the UJ go all the way through the steering column and have the spline for the steering wheel on it?
How difficult is it to get out and replace?

Or is it more likely the steering column itself?

Presumably a MK4 golf part would also fit, but are they generic for all front wheel drive cars or would I have to get a 1.8t specific part? Thanks in advance

Thanks guys. @superkarl oh really? I thought mine had a bit of play longer than the last MOT to be honest, but it's never had an advisory. Just a fail this year. Is that part number for all engine sizes etc? My Mrs still wants it gone though unfortunately, I'm not getting any interest in it other than people offering me £100 or asking whats the lowest I'd take for it. Bought a T5 and that's given me more hassle in the 11 weeks I've had it than the Audi has in over 11 years.
Another issue on the MOT was the headlight adjustment not working, but I can hear both motors working though?
